Why we like them: In first place on our list, UMGC enrolls 1,749 online learners, placing it among the top 2% nationally for online enrollment. This online certificate care is specifically designed to help prepare you for mental health service jobs that do not require licensure or credentialing. It includes six classes, like Theories of Personality and Biological Basis of Behavior.

  • Online Enrollment: 718 enrolled
  • Annual Tuition: $32,193
  • Locations: Tempe (AZ) (and 4 others)

Why we like them: ASU separates integrated behavioral health into two distinct graduate certificates — Clinical and Management. You gain uncommon medical depth through Clinical Medicine/Pathophysiology, which equips you to communicate with medical teams, design psychoeducational programs, and manage somatization, adherence, and chronic pain.

  • Online Enrollment: 31 enrolled

  • Location: Glenside (PA)

Why we like them: Arcadia stays ahead of ABAI standards, and 96% of students we surveyed recommend the school to others. You can complete the certificate in as few as 12 months yet retain up to three years if life intervenes. You benefit from cross-jurisdiction alignment that supports licensure pathways across the U.S.

What Makes the Best Online Clinical Psychology Certificates Stand Out?

When choosing a clinical psychology certificate online it's a good idea to look at the outcomes, credibility, and the substance of what you’ll actually study. Our ranking, built on online enrollment data, highlights programs with enough scale to demonstrate real staying power in the digital space.

We want to dive further into the numbers for you, which tell a much richer story when you pause to look closely at the data.

Why Online Enrollment Tells an Important Story

When comparing online clinical psychology certificates, each school's overall online enrollment numbers hint at the kind of learning environment you can expect. On our list, enrollment ranges from well over a thousand students in the top school (UMGC) to only a few dozen in the third option. That’s a huge spread, and it directly affects the type of experience you’ll have.

At schools with large online populations, you’re stepping into a system that’s built to handle scale, which is why thinking about online enrollment is helpful when finding the best fit for you. It often means:

  • Stronger advising structures for online students

  • Round-the-clock technical support

  • Student services team that knows how to support remote learners

  • A large peer community

This call all translate into more active discussion boards, broader networking opportunities, and a sense of being part of a true online campus.

Meanwhile, schools with smaller enrollments can provide a different kind of advantage. With fewer students per class, it’s easier to get personal attention from instructors and establish more meaningful connections with classmates.

This often works hand in hand with the student-to-faculty ratio: when the ratio is lower, students may enjoy more direct interaction, whether that’s quicker feedback on assignments or closer mentorship opportunities. For example, Arcadia University, the last on our list for online enrollment, has the best student-to-faculty ratio of 11:1, nearly half of UMCG's 20:1 ratio.

So, if you thrive in a bustling, resource-rich online ecosystem, larger enrollments may feel like the safer bet. If you’re seeking a more intimate, seminar-style atmosphere even in an online format, the smaller cohorts can give you exactly that.

The Content: Where Psychology Certificate Programs Truly Diverge

Beyond the statistics, what really sets these certificates apart is the content focus and professional intent.

Some programs lean into entry-level exposure to clinical psychology, giving you a foundation in theories of personality, psychopathology, and mental health. These are great options if you’re exploring the field or planning to stack the certificate into a future bachelor’s degree. On our list, UMGC’s undergraduate certificate in clinical mental health care is the obvious example of a program that's designed as a starting point.

Others aim at graduate-level specialization, such as integrating behavioral health into medical settings. The example here is Arizona State's online graduate certificate in integrated behavioral health. Here, you’ll encounter advanced material like clinical medicine and population-level intervention design — the kind of training meant to bridge mental health and primary care. This program prepares you to collaborate directly with physicians and care teams. Arizona State Online also leans on partnerships with major health systems (like Mayo Clinic and Banner Health) to make sure the training is directly tied to practice.

And then there are programs built around applied behavior analysis (ABA), an area with its very own licensure benchmarks and accreditation requirements. ABA certificates often align to verified course sequences and can open immediate pathways to professional credentialing, even across multiple jurisdictions. Arcadia’s graduate certificate in applied behavior analysis stands apart as a route into ABA licensure. So, this pathway is for those specifically targeting ABA practice and credentialing.

What Student Recommendation Rates Reveal

Another valuable lens on these programs is recommendation rate — the percentage of surveyed students who say they’d suggest the school to others. This measure reflects the lived experience of students, and it often captures factors that raw numbers can’t: the quality of teaching, the responsiveness of support staff, or the sense of belonging in an online environment.

Here's a quick breakdown:

UMGC: 71%
UMGC’s rate is respectable, but lower than its peers. With 467 student reviews, the picture here is fairly consistent: students appreciate the accessibility and flexible pathways, but large-scale online systems can feel impersonal to some. That may explain why its recommendation rate lags slightly. It seems that not everyone finds the individualized experience they hoped for.

Arizona State Online: 93%
ASU shines with a notably high recommendation rate, and the data is especially strong with 1,524 reviews backing it up. This suggests that ASU has struck the balance between scale and satisfaction. Its reputation for cutting-edge course design, integration with top-tier health systems, and well-established online infrastructure likely drive that positivity.

Arcadia: 96%
Though Arcadia’s pool of reviewers is smaller, its 96% recommendation rate is still the best on our list of schools. This kind of near-universal approval often comes from schools where students feel a high level of faculty investment and clarity of purpose. And as we explained above, smaller student bodies may also foster tighter student/faculty connections, boosting satisfaction.

Recommendation rates highlight a meaningful divide. Larger, open-access schools like UMGC deliver accessibility and flexibility but risk being perceived as less personal. High-profile, scalable programs like ASU blend strong infrastructure with prestige, boosting student pride and satisfaction. Specialized, smaller programs like Arcadia’s often win near-perfect marks because students feel their program is niche, intentional, and responsive.

A Psychologist’s Take: Why Certificates Work Best When You’re Clear About Your Goals

Headshot of Nick Bach

Licensed Clinical Psychologist

Dr. Nick Bach is a licensed clinical psychologist and founder of Grace Psychological Services in Louisville, Kentucky. Drawing from his own experience, Dr. Bach offers practical insight into how an associate degree in social science can serve as a meaningful first step toward careers in counseling, psychology, or public service.

"I've completed an online clinical psychology certificate while already working in the mental health field, and I can tell you it's a very different experience than earning a full degree — but it absolutely has value *if* you're clear about your goals.

I think the biggest difference is depth and scope.

Full degree programs dive into diagnostics, supervised practicum, and licensure paths.

A certificate, on the other hand, is more focused — it gives you a strong academic foundation without the clinical hours.

For me, it helped reinforce core concepts like CBT, trauma response, and ethical practices, and I've seen it help others move into roles like behavioral health techs, case managers, or research assistants. But it won't qualify you to be a licensed therapist, and I think that's where some people get confused.

I always tell people: check the institution's accreditation, look for instructor credentials, and make sure it includes practical applications. I think this route works best for career changers testing the waters or those prepping for grad school."

Student Reviews of Online Clinical Psychology Programs

Sara A., Graduated 2016

Attended: University of California - Berkeley

I attended UC Berkeley Extension as an older student in career transition. At first I was intimidated by the cost of the classes but upon completion of my certification, I can confidently report that it was money well spent. Every instructor I had was either currently teaching or prominent in their field and highly motivated to instruct. Our materials were up-to-date (I still refer back to a few chapters and assignments I had!) and the content of the classes was engaging, group oriented when appropriate,... Read More
