"Pursuing an MBA online now means more flexibility and real-life application. With the chance to apply classroom theory to your business metrics while in session, for entrepreneurs and working professionals the ROI just compounds, and is unmatched in traditional programs.

The networking opportunities are also underappreciated — my class had executives there from Amazon and Pfizer, some of whom I approached when we were dealing with FDA compliance for our probiotic line.

[Targeted] MBAs currently command starting salaries 30% above their generalist MBA peers in areas like business analytics...

Our hiring data tells us that targeted MBAs currently command starting salaries 30% above their generalist MBA peers in areas like business analytics (i.e., skills we were pleased to have on board when refining our customer acquisition cost models).

But in fast-paced sectors like supplements, where regulations, marketing channels and consumer trends seem to change as quickly as a flowering basil plant, I would make the case for something closer to a hybrid approach — core general management education with micro-certifications in your operational pain points.

The future belongs to leaders who can pivot across functions while bringing real depth where it’s needed most."

MBA Program Courses and Curriculum

Students enrolled in an online MBA degree program study business concepts in marketing, finance, information technology, and supply chain management, to name a few. Coursework in an MBA curriculum typically covers foundational business principles by integrating assignments and lectures with practical exercises, such as presentations and team projects. These are meant to give individuals hands-on experience of what it's like to work in a real-world setting.

Common courses across MBA programs support a curriculum that builds strong leadership, effective communication, and comprehensive management skills. While course titles may vary across programs, the content of these online classes is similar to ensure comparable student outcomes no matter where you graduate with your degree.

Below are some common courses in MBAs:

Negotiation for Managers

Sustainable Operations Management

What Can You Do With an MBA?

Given that MBAs vary considerably from program to program, not all students graduate with the same job opportunities in terms of employers, starting salaries, or industries. For instance, certain programs can lead to careers with , while others can lead to high salaries or a chance to work in the non-profit or tech sectors. Below is a list of potential career opportunities for graduates, along with job outlook and salary data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Is an Online MBA Worth It?

The value of any higher education will depend, in part, on an individual's financial circumstances, personal goals, and other commitments. Overall, an online MBA can be a suitable choice for individuals hoping to advance their careers or gain job security. As Morgan continues, "In today's uncertain business environment where cutbacks and lay-offs can be necessary, it is crucial to have every edge available to market yourself."

However, in addition to a brighter job outlook, students may also want to consider the following potential benefits and disadvantages of enrolling in an online MBA program:

Potential Advantages

  • An MBA may yield a high salary. Based on the , MBA holders earn a median annual salary of $115,000 per year, which is 77% higher than those with a bachelor's degree.

  • This is a versatile credential that can open employment opportunities in multiple sectors. Employers in a range of industries — such as tech, healthcare, energy, and government — rely on business operations, making the job outlook for MBA holders quite favorable.

  • An online MBA offers students flexibility and the chance to complete coursework at their own pace. Online learning is ideal for non-traditional students, such as working professionals, who need to fit classes around a busy schedule.

Potential Drawbacks

  • This degree can take longer to complete than other graduate programs. Many MBAs require students to have 2-3 years of work experience before enrolling. With an additional two years to finish coursework, it could take up to five years to earn this credential.

  • An online master's may not offer the same as a campus program. Given their limited interaction with peers and faculty, distance learners in an online MBA may be less likely to develop the kind of relationships that can help land a competitive job.

Is an MBA a Good Fit for Me?

Individuals who enjoy solving complex logistical problems, collaborating with others, and taking on leadership positions may find an MBA program to be both rewarding and fulfilling. In addition to providing advanced training in various business fields, this degree pushes students to build a professional network while also refining their own managerial style. Indeed, the data analytics firm, , identifies communication, building relationships, and planning as baseline skills that can help individuals succeed in business professions. Given that these are precisely the skills that an MBA aims to develop, students with a natural ability to excel in these areas or those confident enough to challenge themselves to grow into a leadership role are likely to be a good fit for an MBA program.

How Long Does It Take to Get an Online MBA?

It can take anywhere from 18 months to four years to get an online MBA, but the average is about two years. The length of time you'll need depends on the program's graduation requirements and whether you're a full-time or part-time student.

The total cost of an online MBA varies widely depending on the school's tuition rate and the number of required credit hours in the program. In some cases, it may be cheaper to earn an MBA online, and there are many affordable online MBA options to choose from. Financial aid, such as grants, scholarships, and tuition reimbursement programs, may also help you reduce your online MBA cost.

Are Online MBA Programs Easier to Get Into?

No, online MBA programs are not easier to get into than traditional MBA programs. Each graduate school of business establishes its own admission requirements that are the same for both on-campus and online learning students. However, some schools are less competitive than others and accept a greater number of applicants.

Are Online MBAs Respected?

Online degrees are increasingly respected by hiring managers. What's more, many prestigious institutions offer a distance learning option for their MBA programs. While some employers may prefer those with a traditional degree, an online credential is unlikely to reduce a graduate's ability to secure a job.

What Else Should You Consider?

Those interested in this degree should consider the following factors before deciding which program to enroll in.

Accreditation

Students should choose an accredited school as well as one that is recognized by the , , or . These stamps of approval will ensure students receive a quality online education and qualify for the same employment opportunities as graduates from traditional, on-campus programs.

Return on Investment

While it's important to enroll in an affordable program, students may also want to consider future return on investment. An MBA can yield a high starting salary as well as an increase in earnings over time, allowing students to pay for the degree's upfront costs in the long-term.

Specialized vs. Generalized MBAs

A generalized MBA covers concepts in various business disciplines and may be useful for those who are interested in exploring career options after they graduate. By contrast, students who want to secure a job in a specific area — such as healthcare management — can enroll in a specialized program that includes advanced coursework in a particular area of study.

Online Learning Support and Resources

Distance programs can be difficult to complete, so students should check whether an online MBA offers sufficient learning support. This can include 24/7 access to lectures and assignments, regular check-ins with advisors, and peer learning opportunities.

So glad they did away with ProctorU and do Proctorio now! The program is fantastic. I own a small business and have actually learned a lot that I can apply to my work. I enjoy getting to know my classmates through GroupMes and the Facebook group. & So far I’ve doubled classes and done well! If you’re on the fence, do it- apply!

I’ve had an amazing time at LSUS. It has been super flexible for me as a new mom. I am doing the data analytics concentration and it has definitely kick started me getting opportunities in Analytics at my current job. People are impressed just by the concentration alone! I recommended my sister to go here because she wanted an affordable MBA option to pair with her current law degree, she is an attorney of 12+ years. She did the finance concentration and just finished in Summer 2023 and has already... Read More

One of the best and most surprising things about this program is how supportive your fellow classmates are. You really aren't alone throughout this program. Your classmates are intelligent, kind, professional, and happy to lend a helping hand when they can. Also, this program is very customizable--you can choose not only what concentration to go for (which you can change at any time), but also which teaching/class style works best for you. Whether you like group projects, exams, writing... there... Read More

This accelerated online mba program worked out perfect for me.I was able to work a high stress 40 hour a week job while taking courses online at the same time. Registering for classes was easy. The LSUS Moodle site was very user friendly. Testing was convenient and could be done on my timeline.

Workload is manageable with a. Full time job. Professors are responsive. Classmates are extremely supportive and helpful. Tests use a program Protorio and it is very easy to take a test at my convenience. The program has taught me some, and not hurt my wallet too badly. Overall I would recommend this program to someone.

Great education at a wonderful school. The project management concentration was just what I was looking for. The electives that are offered in this concentration directly relates to my current position (operations management in the oil and gas industry).

I had no issues with the professors during the 4 MBA courses I took. My issue is with the financial aid office and with one of the "enrollment specialists." Financial Aid - I required financial aid when I was originally pursuing the MBA at EWU. However, their system is clearly broken or mismanaged because the FAFSA funds apparently "never reached them" by the deadlines before courses started, causing me to either pay out of pocket EVEN THOUGH I was approved for financial aid, OR, be dropped from... Great value. Tuition was in line with what my employer reimburses, left school with zero debt. Received a job offer 2 months prior to graduating and a promotion 1 year after graduation. My degree has allowed me to work for my dream company so super satisfied. Also made some really great connections. As everything in life it is what you make of it. I highly recommend this program for other adult, mid-career individuals in industries where an MBA is a differentiator.

Being out of school 19 years after undergrad, I found myself needing to change directions. I was laid off twice within two years with little hope for the future in that line of work. After extensive research, I chose the online LSUS MBA program because of the reputation and value. It also didn't hurt the "main campus" of LSU had really started embracing this program, giving it a boost in reputation. I had exceptional experiences in most classes. I'm thankful to see they got rid of ProctorU after... Read More

I’m very proud to be an LSUS alumni! I had the most amazing experience where I met so many amazing individuals who I built a tribe with during my time in my program. I had support from the school to make sure that I was successful which is not something I experienced at my undergrad university. I wish my entire college experience was with LSUS. The professors are also amazing, some are tough but this is not a program to take lightly. Earning my MBA and several certifications here changed my life... Read More

I love WGU is a great University fully accredited! Is affordable and is perfect for someone who work FT and is looking to develop it self. I completed a BS and an MBA and it was the best decision ever. I loved that I didn’t needed to complete weekly discussions. Your progress depends on you.
