In-Depth Analysis of Affordable Online Bachelor's Degrees

Choosing an affordable online bachelor's degree isn't just about paying the lowest price — it’s about finding the best overall value for your investment. That’s why our analysis goes beyond tuition alone, looking closely at other factors based on data we've collected. When I look at the big picture, some insights emerge regarding the 30 most affordable schools with bachelor’s  degrees on our list.

Online Grads Share Their Top Tips for Cutting College Costs

Headshot of Maxime Bouillon

Online Degree Alum

I am Maxime Bouillon, Co-founder & CEO of Archie. I learned great lessons in money-saving without compromising on quality while earning my degree while working and attending school.

I got my Business Administration degree from University of London, all online and in person classes. The ways in which I saved most effectively were through scholarships, through my employer’s tuition assistance and by using used textbooks and free online resources. But then there are unexpected expenses like software subscriptions and tech upgrades that can really add up, so I always recommend a budget for those upfront.

In retrospect, I wish I had looked for more affordable programs sooner. My advice? Stay away from just looking at the tuition fees – include technology fees as well as other hidden costs. But first, always try to find grants and scholarships; they are not seized as often as they should be.

Treat your degree as an investment rather than an expense.

You can reduce or even avoid costs associated with textbooks through scholarships and other means, and by selecting reasonably priced programs that help minimize debt and yield higher returns. Success isn’t only about getting a degree – it’s about being financially successful.  Think of your degree as an investment, not just an expense. You can save on textbooks and debt by leveraging scholarships and by choosing affordable programs that help minimize debt and yield higher returns. It’s not just about getting a degree – it’s about setting yourself up for financial success.

Headshot of Chahanler Marks

Online Degree Alum

I attended Carroll University in Wisconsin where I majored in Information Technology, with a mix of both in-person and online classes.

Managing costs during my degree journey was always top of mind. What worked best for me was planning each semester strategically, looking for courses that offered flexible online options which allowed me to maintain a part-time job in IT throughout my studies. This work experience not only provided income but also gave me practical skills that complimented my coursework.

For financial assistance, I applied for specific tech and digital media scholarships rather than just general aid. These niche scholarships often had fewer applicants but were directly aligned with my field of study. I also took advantage of internship opportunities that provided both course credit and compensation, effectively reducing my overall educational costs.

What surprised me most were the hidden technology costs. Beyond just needing a reliable computer, certain software programs required for specialized IT courses weren't covered in tuition. I learned to look for student discounts and free open-source alternatives whenever possible, which saved me hundreds of dollars each semester.

For textbooks, my best strategy was joining study groups where we could share resources. For technical subjects especially, I found that online tutorials and documentation often provided more current information than textbooks anyway. This approach helped me develop better research skills while significantly cutting costs.

Looking back, I would have started building my professional network earlier in my college career. Connections I made later on opened doors to better-paying opportunities that could have helped finance my education more effectively from the beginning.

For students seeking affordable, quality online programs, I'd recommend looking for schools that emphasize practical, project-based learning over traditional testing. These programs often prepare you better for the workforce while requiring fewer expensive textbooks and resources. After graduation, these practical skills helped me launch my company, CTRL Marks, where I now help businesses with digital media and remote collaboration.

Cost and Financial Aid: The Real Measure of Affordability

Every school on this list offers tuition well below the national average, with the top five schools charging less than $5,300 per year. National University leads with an eye-catching $4,162 tuition, while Kennesaw State ($4,770) and California Coast University ($5,100) aren’t far behind. But as I mentioned above, alongside the experts we interviewed: tuition alone doesn’t tell the full affordability story.

Every school on this list offers tuition well below the national average, with the top five schools charging less than $5,300 per year.

What truly makes college accessible is how much you actually pay, and that’s where financial aid plays a game-changing role. According to federal data, schools like Middle Georgia State and Southern Utah University host students that receive substantial aid. In fact, 99% of students at each school receive sine amount of aid, helping to drastically reduce out-of-pocket costs.

And at Missouri State and Central Methodist, 100% of students receive aid, with students at CMU receiving the highest average package at $18,044. That’s more than double the cost of tuition at many of these schools.

Even better? Some schools offer financial support beyond just tuition costs. Columbia Southern University, for instance, not only keeps tuition under $8,100 but also includes textbooks, a small but significant perk that saves students hundreds each year.

So when evaluating affordability, it’s not just about sticker price — it’s about what kind of financial safety net you'll receive behind the scenes.

Earning Outcomes and Return on Investment

Let’s face it: college is one of the biggest financial decisions you’ll ever make. So beyond asking “What will this degree cost me?” you should also be asking “What will this degree get me?” That’s where return on investment (ROI) becomes crucial.

Affordable tuition is great — but only if it leads to strong earnings

Some of the schools on our list prove that low cost doesn't mean low value. Thomas Edison State University, for example, has a high median salary of $73,358 among its graduates, putting it in the 87th percentile nationwide. (Simply put, graduates here do better than 87% of their peers nationwide.) That’s a huge payoff, especially considering its tuition remains under $9K a year.

To help you visualize this balance between cost and payoff, we pulled together a comparison of the top 10 online schools on this list with the best ROI. This way, you can clearly see where your investment could stretch the farthest.

The Case for Online Bachelor’s Degrees: A Strategic Path to ROI

When it comes to return on investment, online bachelor’s degrees have become one of the most practical, cost-effective ways to earn a respected credential, especially for students balancing work, family, or other life commitments. With tuition costs rising at many traditional campuses, the schools on our list offer a powerful alternative: low-cost, flexible programs that don’t cut corners on quality.

In practical terms, the schools on our list charge far less for bachelor's degrees than the national averages. According to the , public colleges charge $9,750 per year, and that’s just for in-state students. Out-of-state rates soar past $28,000, and private colleges? Even higher, with an average of $35,248.

The average annual tuition on our list is $7,477, while the median is $7,905. Why does that matter? The median gives you a better sense of what most students are likely to pay — unaffected by a few ultra-low or ultra-high outliers — while the average helps paint the overall cost landscape.

But why should prospective students really care about ROI? Because your degree is more than just a piece of paper, it’s a financial decision with long-term consequences. Choosing a school with low tuition and strong post-graduate earnings can mean the difference between paying off your loans quickly or being stuck in debt for years.

Schools like TESU, CSU, and UAF are prime examples of how smart affordability leads to real-world value. Each offers tuition well under $9,000 per year, yet grads from these programs report median salaries above $59,000, which is well into the top half nationally for similar degrees. And thanks to flexible formats, credit for prior learning, and strong support systems, you don’t have to choose between your life now and your career later.

What makes these online bachelor’s programs even more appealing is their ability to adapt to you. Whether you’re transferring in credits, returning to finish a degree, or starting fresh after military service or a career change, many of these online schools are designed with your journey in mind.

EXPERT TIP

To calculate your own costs, estimate the full degree cost by multiplying the per-credit rate by 120 credits (the typical requirement for a bachelor’s degree). Then, be sure to check for added costs like tech fees, e-books, and lab supplies — these are often buried in the fine print.

Online Infrastructure and Scale Matter

Schools with large online enrollments often offer more polished digital experiences. And keep in mind that "online enrollment" means these students are studying 100% remotely.

For example, UVU (7,116 online students), CSU (11,300+), and National University (4,964) serve thousands of distance learners, suggesting well-established platforms and student support systems. These large-scale operations have likely ironed out many of the kinks associated with remote instruction.

FAQs About Affordable Online Bachelor's Degrees

Is It Possible To Get a Bachelor’s Degree Online?

Yes, you can earn a bachelor's degree online. Many accredited universities and colleges offer a variety of online bachelor's degree programs that cover fields such as business administration, computer science, nursing, education, and more.

These programs have several advantages, including reduced commuting and living expenses, the ability to learn from anywhere with an internet connection, and often, accelerated semester schedules that enable faster completion times. They are designed to be flexible, allowing students to choose between synchronous (live) and asynchronous (self-paced) learning formats, making it easier to balance their studies with other commitments such as work or family responsibilities.

Since many traditional universities now offer online degrees, the level of education received is on par with in-person programs. Online programs often include the same rigorous coursework and access to the same resources, providing a comparable educational experience. That said, accreditation is crucial for ensuring the quality of the education and for eligibility for federal student aid. Additionally, online programs may offer various student services such as academic advising, career support, and financial aid to support students throughout their online education.

Most colleges design bachelor's degrees to take four years (usually 120 semester credits), whether they're offered online or in person. The admissions requirements include a high school diploma or equivalent, a minimum GPA, and possibly a minimum score on either the ACT or SAT (though not all schools require admissions tests).

How to Choose an Online Bachelor’s Program?

If you decide that the online learning environment seems like a good fit for you, there are three types of institutions where you can earn an online bachelor's degree: public, private nonprofit, or private for-profit colleges:

  • Public colleges receive part of their budget from state taxes and funnel the money they earn back into the school after covering operating expenses.
  • Private nonprofit colleges also channel earnings back into the school.
  • Private for-profit colleges pay money to shareholders and are run more like businesses. They made early headway in the distance learning space, but the others are catching up.

Of the schools on our list above, 19 are notably public universities. Meanwhile, 7 are private schools, some of which, like Columbia Southern and Avila, still manage to stay remarkably affordable for online students.

However, even before deciding where to study, you may want to consider what to study, though many students make this decision during college or change your mind while attending. In general, you may pursue a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BS):

  • An online BA typically focuses on the humanities and social sciences. Students in these programs are encouraged to think critically by examining the historical, social, and philosophical contexts behind various topics. This degree type can enhance a student's ability to analyze complex issues, formulate coherent arguments, and communicate effectively, skills that are highly valued in many professional fields.
  • An online BS is more common in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. These programs emphasize conducting experiments, analyzing numerical data, and applying scientific methods to draw conclusions. BS programs often require more technical and practical coursework, such as lab work, field studies, and internships, which can be facilitated through virtual labs and simulations in an online setting.

You can choose a major that interests you, that will help secure the kind of job you want, or that can translate to several kinds of careers. There are many factors to weigh, but you normally won't need to declare your major until your second or third year of college. Some programs have limited capacity and you'll be asked to declare during the application process. A school's website will make it clear if this is the case, and will detail any special application procedures.

What Is the Most Affordable Way to Get a Bachelor's Degree?

The most affordable way to get a bachelor's degree involves several strategic decisions to minimize costs. One effective approach is to enroll in a public college or university, particularly within your state of residence, as public institutions often offer lower tuition rates due to state funding. Starting at a community college can further reduce expenses, allowing students to complete general education requirements at a significantly lower cost before transferring to a public four-year university to finish their bachelor's degree.

Another cost-effective strategy is to choose an online degree program. Online programs often have lower tuition rates than traditional on-campus programs and can eliminate additional costs such as housing, transportation, and campus fees. Additionally, online learning offers flexibility, allowing students to work part-time or full-time while studying, which can help offset educational expenses.

Exploring scholarships, grants, and federal financial aid options can also significantly reduce the overall cost. The types of financial aid vary greatly, and the most sought-after forms are need-based grants and merit-based scholarships. These funds reduce future debt because they don't need to be paid back, so it's best to exhaust these opportunities before turning to loans that require repayment with interest. Prospective students might also choose a federal work-study program in which they work part-time for their college in order to receive a tuition grant.

By combining these approaches, students can pursue their bachelor's degree in a financially sustainable manner.

Are Online Bachelor's Degrees Worth the Cost?

Online bachelor's degrees can be worth the cost, but this depends on various factors including the quality of the program, the field of study, and the individual's personal and professional goals. One of the primary advantages of online degrees is their flexibility, allowing students to balance their studies with work, family, or other commitments. This can make higher education more accessible to a wider range of people, including non-traditional students or those who cannot relocate. Additionally, online programs often have lower tuition rates compared to their on-campus counterparts and can eliminate additional expenses such as commuting, housing, and meal plans.

However, the value of an online degree also depends on the accreditation and reputation of the institution offering it. Degrees from well-respected, accredited universities tend to be more recognized and valued by employers. Please rest assured knowing that all online schools we feature on OnlineU are institutionally accredited.

I absolutely love Ashworth. My phone calls are always answered by a friendly person, and my tickets are responded to within 2 days. The community is a great environment. I've had no problem whatsoever with grading, or with tuition. The courses are challenging, yet not overwhelming. The self pace is exactly what I need. There is nothing wrong with this school, especially if you are a "mature" student. Do your work, pay your tuition. It is what you put into it.

CIU has been a great experience. I am local to Columbia, but attending online. New programs and new accreditations mean even more to offer than in the past. There are more opportunities for financial aid, and costs haven't been raised, making it more affordable as well. Having visited campus, improvements and updates to buildings have refreshed the campus. My professors are experts in their fields and truly care about the success of their students. Any feedback I had was taken seriously.

I attended CTU online through my employer-offered benefits. The program was terrific. I enjoyed almost all of my classes, the instructors, and the coursework. The last couple of years have set me on a path to do great things and a pursuit of knowledge uncommon in my workplace and among most of my friends. You can do anything you put your mind to. The staff and mentors at CTU put in the time to set you up for success. The path is laid before you, with courage you can take a step and are that much... Read More

Wonderful! The staff was always supportive and attentive to every student. I am so glad I was able to attend and earn my degree there. I honestly do not have a bag thing to say about this school. Classes were easy to navigate, the financial aid I received was amazing, the professors were knowledgeable and helpful, and now that I am graduating the student support staff are so helpful tin getting my resume, cover letter and interview tips! I am so grateful to everyone!

The issue is the financial department. I completed the FASA application and completed 1 course. However, I was dropped during my 2nd course as a result of bill due. I had made multiple attempts to find out the issue from the FD. The FD never returned my calls or emails. Now, I am being told that I still owe over $2600 in tuition. What a mistake this was.

Purdue Global made me believe in myself again and reminded me that I was capable of achieving my goals despite my age. Every single individual involved in my learning process from my professors, to technical support agents made my learning and success their priority. They were always there ready to help whenever I needed them. I sincerely say that I am very satisfied with the education I have received at Purdue Global because even though the program was challenging, I learned to think critically.... Read More

Spoils, Graduated 2022

First off, I would like to start by saying that many reviews contain false or dramatized information created by students who could not handle the independent, flexible type of education WGU offers. Most of these people should have considered their own schedule, intelligence, and desires before seeking out an online, flexible university. Secondly, I would like to say that I highly recommend WGU to anyone who is looking to advance their education and is willing to put the time and effort into doing... Read More

Lots of unpleasant experiences in this school. First off, I've graduated with a major in Business Management with a minor (or specialization as the school calls it), in healthcare management. My GPA was 3.89, which is 0.01 below honors. Avoid this school at all costs if you need financial aid, because they are massively incompetent in that area. They would often neglect to inform the loan services that I was in school, so every couple months I'd have to remind them to do their jobs and inform them... Read More

Before I enrolled at Purdue University Global, I was skeptical, only because I work full-time and I have four children. Purdue made my goal a reality! Everything and everyone was incredible, advisors, the financial aid team, and of course the professors! Purdue Global has some absolutely amazing professors, they are great people who genuinely care about their students and want to see them succeed. I was very relieved with the entire experience. I graduate in 4 short weeks, with honors! I have never... Read More
