I never saw online PR as a solo practice firmly fixed in the public relations (PR) arena. An integrated marketing approach is essential to understand and manage successful online PR activity and campaigns.
Online PR undergraduates need to appreciate that PR of old, where the focus in certain areas e.g. analyst relations, crisis management; online PR is mix of areas across content, design, influencer marketing, marketing, social media and PR, of course."
What should students look for when choosing an online PR program that will prepare them for today’s communication careers?
"Students need to look for lecturers on an online PR program who have real-life experience and, more importantly, if possible, who are still practicing... Additionally, students need a mix of practical and theoretical content they can engage with. It’s one thing to have great lectures, but students need to put them into practice.
When learning, failure can be more important than experiencing success. Particularly in communications, media relations and online PR, there will be instances when things do not go to plan in working life. If students experience this and know how to work a problem, it can help them in their careers.
Ideally, online PR programs need to be agile to move with the communities, platforms, technology and how audiences react to them."
How can online students gain practical PR experience while completing their degree remotely?
"Students should consider doing the following:
Create a CV. Even if students think they do not have relevant experience yet, they need to start somewhere.
Create an online portfolio and start to add any coursework to demonstrate the type of work they can deliver. This can be established platforms like Behance, LinkedIn, relevant associations and any communities.
Build an online presence. The irony is that just one element of online PR may include personal online branding. Students need to demonstrate as early as possible that can do this and their own profile.
Research the type of organizations they wish to work for and which industries.
Pitch to potential firms. From the research, enquire whether any manage internship and work experience programs for undergraduates
Widen the net. Use your personal (family and friends) and online network to enquire whether any internships or work experience positions are available."

"PR executive is the most common entry-level role. Over the years you’re likely to see more digital, online and social media executive roles. If the hiring managers and HR are sensible, they’ll hire for these types of roles, not a role that spills into everything and a list of skills that one person can’t manage. Too frequently we’re seeing job descriptions that read like a work that would be for a department or team, not an individual.
Internships are far too frequently misunderstood, and the privilege is abused. Professionals can be assigned mundane and uninteresting tasks where they do not receive the benefit of working in a team and undertaking work that is truly reflective of working life.
When I selected interns many years ago, which would be effectively a PR executive role, I was looking for an individual who would embrace flexibility. More importantly, I needed an individual who was open to being exposed and included in the pitches and production work as much as what could be seen as the administration side of the role, something everyone in the team had to do.
Working with interns is time-consuming, and so it should be. It takes effort, energy and enthusiasm to provide a range of inclusive tasks for them in order to receive a rich experience of what it is like to work in a communications and marketing role. They represent your firm as well. From copywriting (media alerts, press releases, social media posts), presentation preparation for pitches (including their own concepts), research, strategy and meeting with clients, they did it all."

Attending Florida A&M University was one of the best decisions I have ever made. If you value learning about your heritage and culture, FAMU is the right place for you. This school is an amazing place but you have to get involved. The courses aren't especially difficult, however if you just go to class and back to your room you will not get the most of the experience. San Jose State will not reach out to you, so you will have to reach out to it and only that way will you have the network needed to excel in the silicon valley. Join clubs, greek life and work on campus; if you don't you'll end your college career with just a piece of paper.

Gonzaga: this was a wonderful school and the people there are the absolute best. The faculty is extremely supportive and I have made lifelong friends through my time at Gonzaga and I would not have changed it for any other college experience. The College of Journalism at the University of Florida was a fantastic place to successfully complete an undergraduate degree. Although the University itself is quite large, the college and faculty truly make you feel cared for. They are experts in their respective fields and have had hands on experiences that transfer to each course you take.
