While I think that education has generally declined in the United States overall, there still seem to be pockets of resistance in the fight to keep liberal or general education meaningful and credible. Read More idea into students' heads, that is, the idea that one should endeavor to know as much as one can about as much as possible, and not just about one's chosen specialiy. This idea was held up as a cornerstone of undergraduate education at SNHU. As a person in my 50s, who went through school when education was taken much more seriously in America, I think I know the differences. Additionally, since I have two daughters graduating college (U of Central Florida and Old Dominion University) next year, the appropriate comparisons of our educational experiences were constantly made in various areas of study. Despite the fact that UCF is considered a good school and ODU a great one, my SNHU (online) education held its own at every turn. So while I've read reviews here critiquing all manner of things at SNHU, from low grades, to lazy counselors, and inexperienced instructors, my experience was exactly 180 degrees "out of phase" with these conclusions. First, I conducted myself at SNHU as I always have in all educational endeavors (in HS and in the military), that is, studiously and very conscientiously. As a matter of fact, when my girls offered that we start a 4.0 challenge, I explained that not only did I have an advantage in age, wisdom, and experience, but that being a person who went to schools in America in the 70's and 80's, my approach to learning was going naturally be more serious than they've ever been expected or required to be. This was borne out in the fact that not only did I receive grades superior to those of my daughters, which might not be a great measuring stick because we were at three different schools, but my grades (when I could tell), and work products were far superior to my younger classmates (when I could tell with reasonable certainty, since other's grades are not always within another student's purview, while many work products were). Lastly, I found my counselor hardworking and attentive, my instructors knowledgeable and understanding (my mother passed away during my second term, and all possible consideration was afforded me, and I was able to stay on track), and most important, my experience was positive to the degree that I am seriously considering pursuing a master's degree in psychological counseling with SNHU. PS - I completed my year at SNHU with all A's and a 4.0 GPA. And while I think the curriculum was reasonably challenging for me, it was much more challenging to younger students who never developed the kind of school work ethic and the fear of shame associated with failure, that is a vital part of my general and educational upbringing. That is, I was a student before the days of social promotion and the attitude of "I'm ok and you ok, and yes Martha, failure IS an option!"

Capella provided an amazing online experience where the instructors were helpful and willing to answer any questions I had throughout the duration of my degree. I was able to graduate with honors in 2016 and currently work in the field of substance abuse counseling. I have used many of the skills I learned at Capella in the work force such as time management, critical thinking and writing. I love to write and I was able to hone this skills through the various tutoring opportunities that Capella provides... Read More such as smart thinking and turnitin. I would say that two areas that Capella can improve are the book allowance and continuity in regards to due dates across classes. I would recommend giving students the opportunity to opt in or out of the standard fee at the beginning of each semester if they are able to obtain their books and materials for cheaper than $150.00. The due dates often go back and forth depending on the teacher and I always had a sigh of relief when the due date was Thursday of every week rather than Wednesday. I think a standard due date across the board would benefit and allow the student to know what to expect from semester to semester. I have always been a huge fan of Capella University and have personally helped at least three people begin their journey at Capella and my fianc is currently still enrolled and well on her way to obtaining her BA in Business.

To start off I am currently a student with Argosy Online. I have never had any trouble getting responses from instructors, financial aid, or anyone else. I believe all of my work has been graded fairly.. even if I haven't particularly like some of them. I would absolutely recommend Argosy to friends and family. School is what you make of it and so is your career opportunities. If you don't lay the ground work you will never go anywhere in life. Some people just don't want to apply themselves and... My educational experiences began in a classroom setting, however, I found a profound dislike for the environment due to students talking out of turn, snoring during class, or the instructor talking or teaching at a high pace. I entered Capella University at a short stint with another on-line university. I have been at this educational institution for a few years and I am so please with the structure of the university. The staff is excellent and well trained, the course work is always in alignment... Read More with the syllabus and additionally, there are visual educational tools available for the students. Capella provide tutoring services, assistance with employment, and many other resources to assist their students in becoming productive and contributing members of society. I always recommend Capella University to friends and family who are interested in furthering their education. I have continue on into the Master program and I am pleased. After this journey, I will continue to pursue my education at this institution.

I am 3 terms away from my BA in Psychology. I have attended several other schools after high school, as its taken about 12 years to complete my degree. I find the professors to all be very knowledgeable in their field and can give real world advice/information in most cases. Most of the professors have their doctorate, some are finishing it up. I've had a couple issues come up and after emailing the professor it was easily resolved. They are caring. I have had one advisor change, but that was because... Read More I needed a military advisor not just a general one. Anytime I have questions or need help with enrolling or choosing classes she is more than helpful. She has called to check on me, emailed to follow up when I was sick to see if was better, to make sure I got connected to the person I needed that she gave the information for and more. I've never had an issue with her! I've had good luck with financial aid and never a lag or anything on it either. I have recommended this school to others, and I will continue to do so. I enjoy the set up of the classes and how easy it is to see what I need to do and turn in. I've learned quite a bit already, and much that can be related to everyday as well. I've never once felt like a number, but an actual person to them. Call them and check them out.

I transferred to ASU after getting my AA from community college. I was excited about the classes offered and looked forward to getting my BS from them. I worked closely with my Academic Advisor to take the best courses possible. At the end of the semester, I called to speak with my AA again to register for next classes. The one that I worked with originally was no longer there. I was asked why I took the classes that I had, because none of them applied to the degree I was pursuing. I told them that... Read More I cleared them with my previous AA. They then advised that my graduation date would be delayed another semester because of the classes I had just completed. So now, I was on the line for 7k in student loans that served me no purpose. I immediately transferred to another school.

I was one year away from graduating with my Bachelor's when I had to stop going to college due to child care issues. I was devastated. I thought I would never get my degree and a coworker introduced me to Ashford. I had my reservations about an online education but I did my research and found that I could get into many Master's programs at typical brick and mortar schools. I really thought the online environment would be different. I have read many of the reviews and while I know nothing is perfect... Read More I do know that some people just do not put forth great efforts to achieve results. I read one person say that you can buy your work online or just reword another student's responses. Well I'm sure you could but what do you get out of doing that? NOTHING...at a brick and mortar school I could pay someone to do my work and I can still get a degree but I have still learned nothing. I believe you get what you put in. I was determined to graduate at a specific time and so I doubled up in classes (I would not recommend this). This was a major challenge for me but I did it and still passed with A's. I will say that I did fail two classes but that was my own fault. The teachers were very understanding of my situation when things came up and sometimes allowed me to make up work. Some teachers have rules and policies and will not budge but I will not say that this is a bad reflection of the school. Rules are rules. As for financial aid and advisors, I did have a few issues here and there but nothing a phone call or an email could not take care of. The staff was always very polite and very helpful when I needed them. My financial aid was never an issue and I received my disbursements as planned. The online experience can be very difficult if you are not disciplined and self-motivated. You do not have anyone holding your hand to get things done but this is college and I don't know any college that "holds your hand." The programs was quite vigorous with their 5 week classes. They were very quick but insightful for me and not everyone participated in discussions as I would have liked but I experienced the same thing in regular school as well. Attending graduation was a very proud moment of mine. My children and family were able to see me walk across that stage in cap and gown and it felt wonderful. I am now applying for my Master's and I would have attended Ashford if they had what I was looking for. I think that you can only make the decision that is best for you so while people will speak negatively of Ashford keep an open mind and be true to yourself. In the end it your education, not theirs.
