A Closer Look at Our List of Popular Online Respiratory Therapy Degrees

Our ranking list orders programs by graduates to show popularity because higher throughput often means a lot of benefits, like steadier course rotations, richer peer consults on vents and protocols, and alumni who’ve already achieves careers in the field.

Across the top 16, the big-scale players like SJVC (93), Pima (42), and Cincinnati (32) create the largest cohorts you can lean on for case discussions, capstone partners, and job visibility.

Below, we also weigh the program-specific earnings (where available), recommendation rates from 90,000+ student surveys, and distinctive features — credit for the RRT, seven-week blocks, faculty access — that actually would shape your day-to-day as a working clinician.

Earnings Potential for Respiratory Therapy Degrees Online

Program-level earnings give you a window into real roles grads are landing at these schools. For example, the ones excelling the most are the programs at Loma Linda (~$97,622), Pima (~$91,209), and Oregon Tech (~$87,197), where alumni outcomes suggest traction with academic medical centers, high-acuity ICUs, transport services, sleep labs, and charge/educator roles.

Lower medians at some institutions (e.g., NKU ~$55,224) don’t make those programs "bad" necessarily. Instead, they remind you that region, hospital mix, and role type (bedside vs. leadership/education/informatics) heavily influence pay. So know what you're signing up for.

You should match a program’s specialty preparation (ACCS, NPS, Polysomnography, Management/Education tracks) to where you want to practice.

Unique Respiratory Therapy Program Features

What becomes clear when looking across these programs is that every school has designed its BSRT pathway around the needs of working adults, but the way they do it varies, sometimes dramatically.

Efficiency

Almost all of these programs recognize prior credentials, fast-track coursework, and build in flexible pacing options to help clinicians advance without stepping away from patient care. But once you dig deeper, each online school reveals distinctive touches.

For instance, SJVC strips down the schedule into one class every five weeks. We like this because it lets busy respiratory therapists focus on a single subject at a time without feeling overloaded.

Compare that with Pima Medical Institute, which takes a much broader approach by offering two distinct tracks: one oriented toward leadership and another toward education, plus electives in areas like polysomnography and home health that expand career possibilities beyond the ICU.

Liberty University takes efficiency in another direction, allowing students to transfer up to 75% of their degree and progress entirely online in short, eight-week courses, with the bonus of free digital textbooks to reduce hidden costs.

Generous Credit and Transfer Policies

Credit and transfer policy can make or break your timeline to graduation. The University of Southern Indiana (USI) is especially generous, awarding credit not only for an associate degree but also for specialty NBRC certifications like NPS or ACCS.

Similarly, Oregon Tech takes efficiency to an extreme by granting an 80-credit block for holding the RRT credential. This can take years off the journey to a bachelor’s.

Student Support

Faculty access and overall support also emerge as defining traits. UT Health San Antonio’s 6:1 student-faculty ratio ensures close mentorship, while Loma Linda goes even further with a 3:1 ratio.

Taken together, these programs are all built to help practicing RRTs advance quickly and flexibly. But the differences allow each bachelor's program to serve a slightly different type of student. For prospective respiratory therapists, the right choice depends on whether you value speed, mentorship, or opportunity.

Student Satisfaction

Think of recommendation rate as a “would you choose this care team again?” The answer is a clear "yes" for schools like UT Health San Antonio (100%), UM-Flint (95%), and NKU (94%). These schools tend to share traits that RRTs feel immediately: small or responsive classes (UT Health’s 6:1 ratio), focused degree-completion design for credentialed therapists, and structures that reduce friction (accelerated blocks, clear transfer maps, credit for NBRC specialties).

RT students should consider our recommendation rates because they correlate with the things that keep you progressing when you’re working nights: predictable rotations, faculty who answer fast when a waveform question hits, tech that doesn’t break, and strong advising/guidance.

Final Thoughts

The respiratory therapy degree programs we list above represent the best online bachelor's options designed specifically for working adults.

Choosing the right online bachelor’s program is really personal. You have to make the best choice for your needs based on the data provided. But something to set your mind at ease: Any of the online respiratory therapy degrees above are legitimate because all schools we feature across our site are fully accredited.

I still recommend the program but have had difficulty in the last semester with or last two classes with financial aid. Prepare not to receive your money until 2 weeks before graduation as this is what is happening to me I now have to work more hours

How tuition works was not up front. It cost me an addition $2000 due to the fact my work place was told it was a cost of $409.50 per class. SJVC included the credits that I tranfered into the program under the tuition. This is fraudulent!!! They are including credits that were paid for and taken by another college in the price when submitting it to my work place. I am sorry I started the program there are many other programs to choose from. I will be reporting this to the AARC.

I graduated this past May from Midwestern State University. I was part of the respiratory therapy program, specifically the RRT to BSRC Online program. Hands-down, this is the best program for RTs. I did a lot of research for these programs and several friends who went through MSU told me it was great. The professors are excellent and always willing to help. The process of getting started was not that difficult and the questions I did have were answered quickly by one of the professors. I would highly... Read More

This was an awesome experience! I love the staff as well as all the business offices there! I was able to sail through with flying colors because I had a great team of professionals and fellow students to aid me. Also the material and study resources are top notched and offer everything a student can need! I am a husband and father of 8 and I was able to complete the course with few interruptions! I recommend INDEPENDENCE UNIVERSITY to anyone who is looking to better themselves and their career!... Read More

I must say, I have had experience with Independence University/Stevens-Henagar since it was called California College back in the 90's. I have had a variety of experiences both good and bad. I actually fired them MANY times, I went through 2 student advisors a month for a while. But, I persevered and they stuck by me the entire time. It was truly like a family for me, dysfunctional at times, but I was comfortable openly complaining about anything that bothered me, even at 3am. I recently completed... Read More

I received my BSRC from Midwestern State University's online program in 2014. I had previously obtained my associates degree from another college and then transferred to MSU to complete my bachelors. I have to give two thumbs up to this school and program. The professors are absolutely wonderful and always willing to help when needed. The course work was always manageable while I worked full time and you get to choose which classes you want to take instead of being told you have to take specific... Read More

Attended: University of Akron

I’m a 27 year old Navy vet who served 6 years active duty as a Hospital Corpsman. I got out of the military in June of 2023 and began attending Tri-C western campus initially thinking that’d be easier for me. It served its purpose and I did enjoy my time at Tri-C, but, when I submitted my JST to them they only gave me 1 credit that applied towards my major, so I transferred to the University of Akron. Over the summer I went into the Al transfer office many times and was met head to head with staff... Read More

The Respiratory Therapy Program at Ohio State University prepares individuals for a career in respiratory care clinically, professionally, and personally. The directors hold our personal skills with patients and other professionals to as high of a standard as our clinical skills. Our access to The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and affiliated institutions allows us to have resources from a variety of backgrounds that give us a well-rounded education as well as clinical experiences. My personal experience as a Respiratory Therapist student at FAMU was indeed an educational experience with a practicum of hands on in the clinical setting. The professors were superb in delivering the content for every course and they were available to assist you with questions on a daily basis. The students were competitive and we had study groups often. I felt more like a practitioner than a student! The professors coordinated with local hospitals and out of state hospitals to ensure that we were... Read More
