Embracing Inclusivity: Christian Colleges Supporting LGBT Youth

Amidst the growing demand for online degree options, Christian universities have recognized the immense potential of online education to reach diverse student populations worldwide. These institutions have astutely identified and capitalized on this niche, as underscored by the reported by various Christian colleges.

The COVID-19 pandemic served as a catalyst, further accelerating the adoption of online education. These institutions have strategically diversified their offerings, spanning disciplines from theology and ministry to business, education, and healthcare. The versatility of degree offerings appeals to a broad spectrum of learners on a global scale who are seeking quality education. 

The growing availability of online programs offered by Christian colleges has greatly enhanced accessibility to higher education. However, amidst these efforts, challenges persist — especially concerning the experiences of LGBTQ+ youth within these academic spaces. Despite the inherent inclusivity of online education, not all students, particularly those identifying as LGBTQ+, find the same sense of acceptance and support within these faith-based institutions.

Title IX

Title IX, a federal civil rights law passed in 1972, was initially designed to ensure gender equality in educational programs receiving federal financial assistance. While it has been pivotal in addressing gender-based discrimination, its application concerning sexual orientation and gender identity has been subject to debate and varying interpretations. 

Despite Title IX's intent to prevent discrimination, its exemptions concerning religious freedoms have created a complex landscape where Christian universities may legally justify policies that marginalize or discriminate against LGBT youth.

Christian universities have been interpreting Title IX exemptions to uphold conservative beliefs about sexuality and gender based on religious freedoms. These exemptions enable them to openly discriminate against or exclude LGBTQ+ individuals from certain educational opportunities or resources without risking their federal funding

The Trevor Project's 2023 on the Mental Health of LGBTQ Young People had some startling statistics that place this kind of prejudiced behavior into perspective: 

  • While 41% of LGBTQ youth through age 24 seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year, 14% attempted it. 
  • The overwhelming majority of LGBTQ youth have shared experiences of facing verbal harassment in educational settings.
  • Roughly 1 in 3 LGBTQ youth expressed that their mental well-being was consistently poor, which they primarily attributed to anti-LGBTQ policies and legislation.
  • Almost two-thirds of LGBTQ youth reported that their mental health significantly deteriorated upon learning about potential state or local laws prohibiting discussions about LGBTQ individuals in schools.

Religious Freedom and Discrimination

According to data released by the , the second most prevalent motive behind hate crimes in college is related to sexual orientation.

Researchers from the analyzed data from the Access to Higher Education Survey and found that 33% of LGBTQ+ youth were bullied, harassed, or assaulted while attending a college or university. This is even true for online students, as 12.5% of LGBTQ+ students experienced online or other indirect bullying.

Christian colleges have faced criticism for policies that prohibit LGBTQ+ expression among students, faculty, or staff. Such policies might include "codes of conduct" or "statements of faith" that condemn homosexuality or transgender identities. The enforcement of such policies might involve disciplinary actions, limitations on participation in school activities, or even expulsion. This situation can cause immense stress, emotional turmoil, and a sense of alienation for LGBT+ students who seek higher education while navigating their identities. 

These institutions claiming Title IX exemptions for the purposes of discrimination often issue public statements, suggesting that practicing homosexuals, along with other unrepentant sinners, will not inherit the kingdom of God. Others make headlines for firing professors due to their queer identities. Many more are embroiled in lawsuits alleging various forms of mistreatment against LGBTQ+ students, including conversion therapy, expulsion, denial of housing and healthcare, as well as instances of sexual and physical abuse and harassment.

Critics argue that these policies contradict the principles of inclusivity, compassion, and acceptance, which are considered fundamental aspects of Christian teachings. They emphasize the importance of creating safe and supportive environments for all students, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

Christian Schools Creating Safe Environments for LGBTQ+ Students

Despite facing religious discrimination, a by the Trevor Project shows that one in five LGBTQ+ youth report that their religion or spirituality is important to them. 

Traditionally viewed as conservative environments, some Christian educational institutions have defied the norm, creating safe spaces and support systems for LGBT+ youth. These Christian colleges are engaging in dialogue, revisiting their policies, and offering support groups or resources, indicating a shift towards greater inclusivity. 

Pacific Lutheran University

One notable example is the approach taken by Pacific Lutheran University (PLU) in Tacoma, Washington. PLU, affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), has actively implemented policies and programs to support LGBTQIA+ students. The university offers gender-inclusive housing options, provides comprehensive healthcare coverage for transgender students, and hosts educational events and discussions centered on LGBTQIA+ issues. Such initiatives aim to create an environment where all students feel respected and supported, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation. 

remains distinct from other Christian universities. Rather than "prohibiting LGBT behaviors," PLU writes: "The University prohibits any activities which cause or threaten physical or mental harm, suffering, or exhaustion; which demean the dignity and personhood of any individual; or which interfere with one’s academic progress."

Saint Leo University

Saint Leo University is another faith-based institution that refuses to discriminate against a group of students for any reason. Saint Leo provides safe havens for LGBTQ+ individuals, such as the . This dedicated resource offers a nurturing environment where students can openly share their identities and narratives without the fear of facing bias, fostering an atmosphere conducive to both personal growth and academic achievement. Whether engaging through online forums or within the physical campus, the Prism of Saint Leo actively promotes the holistic well-being and success of college students by embracing inclusivity and understanding.

Union Theological Seminary in New York City

Another institution making strides in LGBTQIA+ support is the . This historically Christian seminary has embraced an inclusive stance, offering courses and workshops that explore the intersections of theology and LGBTQIA+ identities. Through these educational avenues, Union Theological Seminary encourages critical discussions and theological reflections, fostering an environment that accepts and respects diverse identities.

Hope College

Hope College, affiliated with the Reformed Church in America, has taken steps to establish support systems for LGBTQ+ students. The college has LGBTQ+ student organizations and initiatives focusing on inclusion and acceptance. Hope College as "Committed to our Christian aspirations to be faithful, welcoming and transformational, we work to foster an environment where every person finds a sense of belonging, including LGBTQ+ individuals."

Loyola Marymount University

LMU, a Jesuit institution, has been recognized for its efforts in supporting LGBTQ+ students. The university has established , inclusive policies, and programs aimed at fostering an affirming environment.

Trinity College

Trinity College has Episcopalian roots, and the university's provides a range of support, including counseling, educational programs, and community-building activities. Trinity also hosts events like Pride Week and allies' training sessions to promote dialogue and understanding across the campus community, creating a more affirming environment for LGBTQ+ individuals.

These examples signify a shift within Christian educational settings, highlighting efforts to create welcoming spaces where LGBTQIA+ youth are not only tolerated, but embraced and supported. Such initiatives reflect a growing understanding among some Christian institutions that compassion, empathy, and inclusivity align with the core teachings of Christianity. These institutions can serve as models, demonstrating that religious teachings and acceptance of LGBTQIA+ individuals can coexist harmoniously by fostering a supportive environment where all students are embraced for who they are.

However, it's important to acknowledge that amidst continuing efforts, the push for LGBTQ+ inclusivity in Christian educational settings often faces resistance from conservative factions within these institutions, highlighting the ongoing struggle for acceptance and understanding.

If You Go To School Online, Does It Matter?

The online learning format may not shield LGBTQ+ students from the ideological stance of some Christian institutions. Institutional values and teachings often persist within online courses and communities, marginalizing LGBTQ+ students seeking education in these spaces. The perpetuation of discriminatory actions based on claims of religious freedom are impacting students' ability to fully engage in their educational experience. Additionally, the absence of uniform standards or oversight specific to online programs within religious institutions could allow discriminatory practices to continue unchecked.

As online education continues to evolve, addressing and rectifying discriminatory practices within these spaces remains a pressing challenge to ensure equitable access and inclusivity for all students — regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
