Artificial intelligence (AI) has been used in various forms for decades, supporting everything from administrative tasks to data analysis. But over the past two years, the rise of generative AI — tools that produce text, images, and code — has made AI a central topic in higher education. Colleges and universities are now exploring how these advanced tools can improve student outcomes and streamline teaching.

Some schools are using AI to tailor learning experiences and meet the individual needs of students. Programs like DreamBox and Knewton analyze student performance data to customize lessons and offer targeted feedback. While adaptive AI systems can enhance education, institutions must use them thoughtfully to ensure students still receive the human support and critical thinking opportunities essential for deeper learning.

AI in Academic Research and Data Analysis

AI’s ability to process large datasets is transforming how institutions perform academic research. In a (OUP), 76% of researchers reported using an AI tool in their research at present. Natural language processing (NLP) allows researchers to analyze data in a fraction of the time, and it can help reveal findings humans may have overlooked.

Streamlining Admissions and Operations with AI

A found that half of educational admissions departments were currently using AI, and they predicted that number would increase to 82% by 2024. Some common uses of AI in admissions offices include reviewing transcripts, letters of recommendation, and admission essays.

Admissions isn't the only area where AI is improving operations in the higher education sector. At Ivy Tech Community College in Indiana, a pilot study proved AI could enhance data retrieval across 10,000 course sections. The system identified 16,000 students at risk of failing within the first two weeks of the semester. Outreach workers then contacted each student and offered support. As a result, the school saved 3,000 students from failing, and 98% of those contacted achieved a grade of C or higher by the semester's end.

Although AI has improved operations for some, others worry that AI lacks the human elements needed to help students succeed. To prevent operations becoming too hands-off, the recommends keeping people in the loop when using AI in schools.

  • Bias and Misinformation

A key risk with using AI is bias. AI systems learn from the data they’re given, and if that data is skewed — whether in terms of race, gender, or socioeconomic status — AI may end up reinforcing those biases. 

Another issue is "AI hallucinations," which is when AI tools generate inaccurate or misleading information. This is troubling in academic settings, where the reliability of information is critical. If students or researchers can’t trust AI-generated data, it erodes confidence in its usefulness for research.

According to a 2024 report by the (NEA), preventing these problems starts with building AI systems that are more accountable. The report highlights the importance of having diverse teams involved in developing AI and making sure there are measures in place to monitor for bias. Educators should learn to spot these issues, so they can guide students in recognizing when AI is biased or inaccurate.

  • Academic Dishonesty

AI also raises the risk of academic dishonesty. In a , almost a third of students said professors have warned them not to use generative AI, and more than half (59%) are worried they’ll be accused of cheating if they do. While some colleges use AI-detection programs to flag potential cheating, these tools aren't foolproof and often misidentify AI-generated content.

As AI systems become more embedded in higher education, data privacy is emerging as a significant risk. AI systems often collect vast amounts of student data, including personal information, learning habits, and academic performance. Without strong data protection measures, this information is more susceptible to misuse, hacking, or unauthorized access. 

Colleges and universities will need to implement stringent data privacy protocols to keep student information secure. This means not only complying with data protection laws but educating students and faculty about how AI tools use and store data.

One of the more subtle risks of AI in education is its potential to weaken critical thinking. As students increasingly rely on AI to generate ideas, write essays, and solve problems, there’s worry that they may stop engaging in independent, deep thinking. And educators and parents aren’t the only ones with this concern. According to , over 50% of students believe that over-relying on AI could hurt their academic performance.

Educators play a crucial role in guiding students to use AI responsibly. By encouraging a balance between AI use and independent thinking, they can help maintain the intellectual rigor that higher education requires.

Ethical Ways for Students to Use AI in School

Brainstorming Ideas

Students can use AI to generate topic ideas or explore different angles for research projects. A student working on a paper about climate change could use AI to brainstorm potential topics. Once AI provides these options, the student should decide on the final direction and thesis themselves. If the student chooses to focus on agriculture, for instance, it’s important that their argument and conclusions are based on their own research and analysis.

Outlining

AI can help students create a rough outline to structure their essays or projects. A student writing a literature review on Shakespeare might use AI to generate an outline with an introduction, thematic analysis, and conclusion. From there, the student should build the details and arguments independently. For example, if AI suggests focusing on the theme of fate in Romeo and Juliet, it’s up to the student to expand on this with their own insights and textual analysis.

Research Assistance

Students can use AI to assist with summarizing articles or suggesting sources. A student researching the history of artificial intelligence might ask AI to summarize key points from an academic article or recommend relevant studies. But that student will need to examine the original sources carefully in order to verify the accuracy of the AI’s summary and evaluate the credibility of the information. 

Proofreading and Feedback

Grammarly and other AI editing apps can help students check their work for grammar errors or suggest ways to improve sentence structure. A student submitting a final essay on environmental policy might use AI to flag overly complex sentences or detect grammatical mistakes. The student would then review AI’s suggestions carefully and only accept changes that align with their intended meaning. 

Citing Sources

Students that use AI to generate content or help with research must properly cite it to avoid plagiarism. If a student uses AI to summarize a section of their literature review, they should cite both the original source and acknowledge AI’s contribution. Being transparent about how they used AI prevents misunderstandings about the originality of their work.

Educators should help students explore different AI use cases while building their AI literacy. Developing these skills and habits will support their academic success and better prepare them for the future workforce.

The Future of AI in Higher Education

AI’s role in higher education is evolving quickly, with virtual tutors, augmented reality, and automated grading already changing the learning experience. are to train both students and faculty on using AI.
