I enjoyed learning about the tools to utilize how to understand and help children and adolescents during their development. I am taking this course as one of the last few necessary for completing my degree in psychology. I work three jobs, all of which relate to the field. In my primary job I serve as a youth care worker in a residential treatment facility for adolescent females with mental health, trauma, and behavioral issues. Read More therapeutic programming, as well as provide transportation, cook, and provide support in caring of the horses on campus from our equine therapy program. I also work as a substitute teacher and one-to-one aide at the school associated with the RTC as a side job, where I get to work with the same group of young women. My other job is with an organization where I serve as a waiver service provider on a per diem basis. I do a lot of the same work with this job as I do with my full time job, however with an even younger population. This course will assist me in gaining further insight that I may apply when gaining a better understanding of the development and background of the young minds I work with each day and how those experiences affect the present. I look forward to working with you all this semester!

At Texas Southern University, I completed my M.A in Sociology. There was where I met some of the university's most intellectual minds and the professors were well-versed in the subject matter. The professors did not make the journey of completion easy but when you are passionate about your studies, the work isn't viewed as difficult. I attended the University of Toledo for my Undergraduate degree and my Masters degree from the years of 2009-2017. The University of Toledo provided me with many opportunities I would have not received at other institutions. I was born and raised in the city of Toledo. The University of Toledo allowed me to feel as if I was attending a college that was not attached to the city I was born and raised in. Read More The amount of organizations from all walks of lives that UT has is probably the best selling point. They have over 250 student organizations. I was also able to study abroad during my undergraduate career as well which UT helped make it very affordable. I think the best part of my time at the University of Toledo was the networking aspect. I was able to meet so many influential people not only at the university but also within the community. I think the biggest learning opportunity for the University of Toledo would be with student diversity. The university of Toledo is a PWI (particularly White institution) which becomes very visible when you look at the different funding of organizations. For example, the Latino Student Union and the Black Student Union receive about half of the funding the members of IFC and PANHEL recieve. As a Hispanic student, there were many times that I felt I couldn't find anyone on the campus that looked like me or came from a similar background as me. Overall, my time at the University of Toledo I thoroughly enjoyed and it prepared me for my upcoming PhD.

The Arizona State University is a remarkable university that offers a great number of Doctoral, Graduate and undergraduate degrees in many different fields. ASU seeks to extend the boundaries of humanistic sociology be exploring connections between sociology and the needs of employers by being a modern university and on top of technology. I love the sociology program at the University of Houston - Clear Lake. The program is relatively small, and I have made true friends within the program. I do not feel stereotyped or judged, and classmates make the effort to make sure I am doing okay. My professors are top notch, and I learn much more than just textbook answers from my professors. Morehead State University's is located in the middle of the Daniel Boone National Forest. Campus is simply gorgeous. The lawn is always neatly manicured and the Appalachian foothills provide a picturesque backdrop to daily student life. If you enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, kayaking, and rock climbing then Morehead would compliment your interests. The university has private hiking trails that connect with national and state trail systems; a private lake know as Eagle Lake were students can... Read More fish, hike, or picnic; and MSU is also adjacent to Cave Run Lake. However, for those interested in nightlife Morehead would probably disappoint. The town has 2 small bars that host live music regularly; however, the music selections are not very diverse and after a few weekends you will probably hear everything the town has to offer. Most students visit Lexington, Kentucky or Huntington, WV, both of which are about an hour drive from Morehead, to take in a larger variety of entertainment. Living in Morehead is very affordable. Rent and utilities are fairly low if you choose to live off campus, although you鈥檙e likely to encounter a bit of a commute, probably less than 10 minutes, for the cheaper housing options. Unlike most university towns, there is no large gated apartment complex to accommodate off campus students. Apartments fill quickly and it would be best to look into housing options as soon as possible. Also important to know, properties near the university sell and rent higher than most other housing in town. If living on campus there are a few different options for graduate students. The majority of housing is standard dorm or suite housing, but there are some on campus apartments available. All housing is shared and the past few years the university population has grown so rapidly that they have had to put extra people in rooms, making the living situation uncomfortably cramped. Tuition to the graduate program is also affordable. Students pay one rate regardless of the class taken or state residency status. This makes Morehead more affordable to out-of-state residents. The university also offers many opportunities for funding primarily in the form of Graduate Assistantships, which provide a $10,000 a year stipend. To qualify you must be accepted to the university, enrolled in at least 9 credit hours, and maintain a 3.0 GPA in graduate courses. Usually GAs try to work in their academic department, but there are positions in almost every area of the university many of which provide great job experience for careers outside academia. In the department of Sociology, Social Work, and Criminology GAs are not assigned a particular function, such as researching or teaching, but instead will most likely be required to do a variety of these tasks, as well as grading papers, assisting students, or performing regular office-type tasks. The biggest downside to the graduate program at Morehead is that there is no tuition waiver for Graduate Assistants. However, the stipend is enough to completely cover tuition and most class materials. Students may choose to augment living expenses with loans or by working part time at another job. Most classes are at night after normal working hours or online and GA hours are often very flexible. The M.A. program in Sociology is flexible and designed primarily for individuals pursuing careers outside academia. The department offers graduate level concentrations in General Sociology, Criminology, Sociology and Regional Analysis, and Gerontology. The department鈥檚 strongest areas of research are in Rural Sociology, Criminology, and Gender and Sexuality. Class sizes are small and offer plenty of opportunity for discussion. Graduate advisors are usually helpful and receptive. The department is quite small, so there is less interdepartmental politics to deal with, i.e. you probably will not get stonewalled for working with the 鈥渨rong person鈥� like you would at universities with larger departments. The department and university offer funding for students who present at conferences; expenses are usually completely covered. Morehead State is not a highly competitive school, if you are looking for a top tier 鈥渂ig name鈥� program this university is not for you. On the other hand, if you are looking for a program that can be highly individualized, a career outside academia, or professors who will really work to help you succeed Morehead State University is the perfect place.

Overall, the Sociology program at UNC-Chapel Hill is strong due to its focus on professionalization of graduate students through emphases on research, publications and teaching. The program is funded for the academic year, and while it is not funded as highly as some other programs (several comparable top programs offer higher stipends and summer funding), it is still great to be able to attend a program offering funding. Read More which students are available for peer support seems variable and highly segmented by cohort, partially because the workloads and stress levels among students are typically very high. While the program seems to recruit a diverse group of applicants, it seems that those who have accepted in recent years are less diverse - not only in terms of race, ethnicity and nationality, but also in terms of age - many of the graduate students currently are white, from the U.S., and have continued into graduate school directly out of undergraduate, so there are fewer mature students having had professional (or life) experience prior to the program. This is not to say that there is no diversity, but compared to what could be found at similar top programs, it does seem more homogeneous than one would expect in this field. Faculty are accessible and supportive, though teaching quality is also highly variable. I imagine this program is similar to others at top research universities when it comes to having its own strengths, challenges and flaws, and as with any program, students will get out of it what they put into it. Students who are prepared and invest their time and effort will be well-trained and have good professional prospects.
