My time at ASU was one I won't find myself forgetting. I know that is something many may say of their alma matter but I feel it rings true for me. The classes I took in ASU's English program were equal parts challenging and enlightening. I found myself eager to attend class and ready to tear my way through readings. I also felt urged as a writer to continue to improve instead of letting myself stagnant, thinking I had peaked. I will always be grateful for this time at ASU because it gave me plenty... At age 19, I took advantage of Starbucks' partnership with Arizona State University in which my Bachelor's degree would be payed for by working in a coffee shop for twenty hours a week. It was an incredible deal! I adored my job and flourished at Arizona State. After graduating high school, I completed one year at a traditional state school, and did poorly. I had a 2.6 GPA and risked losing my spot in my program. However, ASU changed everything for me. Immediately upon beginning my courses, my GPA... Read More skyrocketed and I felt fulfilled with what I was learning. With my classes being online, I was able to pace myself and learn on my own, not space out in class and be distracted with other classmates as I had at my previous school. Even better, my professors were worth their weight. I could tell they genuinely cared about what they were teaching (except for maybe one philosophy professor). Several professors were even nationally recognized and boasted impressive awards and contributed greatly to their fields, for which I felt privileged to be their student. By graduation, I was finishing six months ahead of time, had a 3.72 GPA, and was accepted into Golden Key International Honor Society. I could speak positively about my experience at ASU for hours, and that just shows how much love and respect I have for my Alma Mater.

Arizona State is a wonderful school with many highly-ranked departments and programs. It is a large school with multiple campuses, which means it has an incredibly large amount of resources and opportunities, not to mention clubs, student organizations, student government, the honors college, etc. Undergraduates are able to participate in world-class research alongside professors, work on projects with NASA, write for a number of literary magazines and so many other things. Additionally, the school provides a large alumni base, which allows for resources and job opportunities while you are still in school and after you graduate--ASU alum are everywhere!

Arizona State University is a fun, open-minded university that enables their students to succeed. I had never felt more cared about in an academic environment than I did when I attended ASU. There are endless options when it comes to the educational paths you can embark on. From my peers to professors, to guidance counselors I had the support needed to do my best. Whenever I hear someone talk about wanting to go back to school, I always recommend ASU as an affordable, innovative university. The school is diverse, safe, and a fantastic place to make lasting connections. I am proud to be an alumnus of this school. Upon graduating, I instantly missed college. The environment and the faculty that ASU has made my college experience so memorable, and is something I will always cherish. When I was an incoming freshman, I had shallow expectations for what college would be like. I wasn't very excited to be attending in general. I was quickly reconvinced that going to college was the best decision I could have made for myself. To this day, I still look back on my education from Arizona State Univesity as being the most significant investment I have made so far. To anyone debating on whether to attend Arizona State University or not go. You will not regret it.

As for English degrees, ASU offers a decent education, even though it's curriculum lacks rigor. There's lots of faculty so many different research interests are represented. There is considerable support here and the flexibility of doing what you want to do if great. If anything, there is too little structure, and I felt that I could avoid undesirable subjects too easily because of the flexibility of the program. The tenured or permanent faculty are typically good, but the STAFF sections are best... Read More avoided. I also minored in French. The foreign language department has certainly improved greatly since I started in 2005. While the selection of foreign languages are comparatively robust, I felt that certain languages had less offerings then others, like Portuguese, most likely a problem of demand. They have the Critical Languages program which teaches some fairly unique languages and is a must for anyone interested in important yet uncommonly taught languages. My largest criticism is my degree didn't challenge me sufficiently, which could have hindered my chances in graduate school if I didn't supplement my education with ample challenges outside of the classroom.
