One reason I moved to VA for the program was the quality of the professors and the flexibility of the program. All of my classes have given me the ability to focus on my specific research interests within the context of the course. The professors have been very helpful and accessible. The out of state tuition rate is astronomical; however, this year they have offered a discounted rate. Overall, I have been satisfied. I only wish there were more options for funding. Graduated assistantships are hard... Read More

Well worth my six-hour round trip commute for my PhD in Education program. I have always felt challenged, supported, and constructively assessed by all department faculty. The proximity to Washington, D.C. is immeasurable for anyone in International Education. The curriculum is relevant and current, yet due to employment and economic responsibilities, additional online course offerings would be appropriate for today's graduate learners. Also, while public transportation is widely available and affordable,... Read More

George Mason University is an excellent school and the Recreation Department is top notch. The classes are engaging and the instructors are experts who care about the learning of the students. However, if you are looking for a vibrant graduate student live, you will need external sources as there are not many ways for students to meet and hang out after class. A car is a necessity living in Northern Virginia to be able to access the cultural resources of the area and traffic is heavy during rush... Read More

A good balance of online and on campus learning. Professors are very helpful, knowledgeable and approachable. Good quality of education. The cons... the program did not offer the class that I think is essential and I tried to arrange in through independent studies but it was impossible to do.So the program is not flexible enough.

I am well pleased with the program, professors and courses, but I am greatly disturbed that our school does not offer grants or scholarships to graduate students. This seems to go against the very reason we pursue high education.

The counseling and development program at GMU has a big focus on social justice, multiculturalism, and advocacy. I am proud to be in a program that trains student to think outside the box and really push barriers that clients may face. I think that this program really prepares you to work with diverse populations which is a good skill to have.

GMU includes innovation as part of their vision, and this was a major factor in my choosing to go there. There is definitely an aura of progress and future thinking there that I am proud to be a part of. Traffic is absurd in Northern Virginia, and the cost of living is somewhat high, but GMU seems to have been very considerate with many infrastructure improvement projects. Without a doubt a university that is looking ahead.

With respect to my program of study, I feel that all classes need to have field experience. Having a filed experience (i.e. each class having set aside a specific number of hours to go work in the school system) is a great exposure. Unfortunately only some classes have that. Apart from that it I have great professors, counselors and involvement in the campus.

The pros of my graduate program at George Mason University is that it is a nationally accredited program run by teachers, administrators, and staff members that are passionate about what they do. Teachers and Professors stay after, meet with you before you are even in the program, work with you in order to answer all of your questions. They really go above and beyond their duty to go out of their way to help you do your best. That is what matters at the George Mason University Community. They want... Read More

The Education school is really reputable, especially in competitive Fairfax County, but as a grad student and living off-campus I am not invited to any campus events and have not met any people outside of class meetings. The location is really great though; right outside of DC and there is plenty to do in Fairfax. However the social scene for a grad student is low and the area is expensive.
