Overall, I really enjoyed the Psychology program at Northwestern University of Louisiana. There were a few classes that I felt could have been instructed better, but there were also some absolutely amazing professors that truly showed us how we could apply the knowledge in practice. I feel that some of the problems could be fixed if the program had more funding.

Read More my time at UP2, the cafeteria leaves a lot to be desired quality-wise but it does provide a lot of options, the gym is absolutely amazing, and the financial aid services can be frustrating.

The campus is beautiful, and there is always some activities happening. There are many avenues to get involved in such as the campus radio, the newspaper, the year book committee, and several interest groups like the gamers' guild. The campus offers a variety of degree programs. The ones that I recall were a hit were business, education, the arts, and medicine. I would say that the degree program I was a part of was still in development as there was only one instructor for my concentration at the time. Now, I believe there is a second instructor who specializes in video media. They just introduced Cintiqs and the 3D printer between 2015-2016. The degree program did introduce new things over time such as introducing us to the AIGA, American Institute of Graphic Arts, and taking a tour to the Digital Media Institute. I was one of the first to be offered a scholarship to work in their new Graphic Design Center. They have a great visual arts program, music, and theatre department. There could have been more coverage on contemporary artists or brought in screen printing as a class. I do wish there was more collaboration between the departments as they often seem to segregate themselves. I would still recommend Northwestern State University for its affordability, community, and helpful faculty to anyone. I have known a few people who had transfer to NSU simply because of expenses. The only reason I am not at Northwestern for my graduate school is because they do not offer the Master of Fine Arts (MFA); only MA.

Someone else wrote that the professors are too busy to help students back in 2013. It hasnt changed. You are on your own in this program and you are on your own finding internships. One professor is so disorganized that you are always confused and lost in his classes and when you ask questions, he acts like you should just be figuring things out on your own and "chilling out". He can barely talk in class...hes always looking up at the ceiling and takes 10 minutes to say what he is trying to say.... Read More The director is never around and the only professor that is teaching most of the classes is more into his fitness then teaching. If I didnt have a family member working in the medical field to help me, I never would have gotten an internship. When you graduate, you won't make that much money as a counselor. You have to become licensed and they dont really tell you that before you begin or when you are in the program. You might make 15 an hour for the next two years if youre lucky. The people they let in this program will make you question the process. There are better programs in the state to choose for counseling. This program could be a lot better if they would hire another professor, maybe one that has more teaching experience. I loved the people I was in the program with, but they all complained about the same thing I did. If you want to get a Masters in counseling in this state, go to ULM or LSU.

LSC at Northwestern State is an experience in which you get out what you put into it. Like at any college, you can choose to party or procrastinate, improve your social life, not take academics seriously, but when it gets down to it, your friends will graduate and you won't. If you like a challenge, small class sizes, open-minded discussion, learning about culture and how you fit into it, LSC might be for you. As a student, I studied hard, but I also got involved on campus in student organizations and greek life. LSC students are outgoing, tend to go the extra mile, hold leadership positions in most campus organizations, and are a cut above the rest upon graduation. Studying hard, being active on campus, and making life long friends is too much a life changing experience to miss out on, especially at LSC.

I attend the Northwestern State University's School of Nursing in Shreveport and not the main campus in Natchitoches. There are a few benefits in attending the smaller but more specialized branch. These include but are not limited to easier access to faculty, more academic competitiveness, increased educational quality that comprises a valuable graduate program. However, in gaining these benefits we surrender to a smaller student diversity and social life activities. I feel the trade off is worth... Since, I am a nontraditional student who is working full time, I am not in need of social programs as I am fully involved with current classmates, friends, relatives, and coworkers.

Northwestern State University of Louisiana is a great stepping stone program for students interested in pursuing their doctorate in clinical psychology. The professors sincerely care about their students' well-being and futures. You are able to get hand on experiences with psychotherapy during their wide variety of externship sites. I am very blessed to have graduated from Northwestern State University of Louisiana in May of 2009. The faculty went above-and-beyond their "call of duty" to help me with my educational and musical endeavors.
