DO NOT ENROLL IN THE ONLINE PROGRAM!!! Advising is beyond appalling. GWSPH has vastly overenrolled since 2020 and can't deliver what they advertise online. Impossible to finish in one year, very challenging to finish in two. Not enough spots in required classes. Glorified independent study at best. The recorded lectures from GW faculty are fantastic. Read More unprofessional to several students in my section). But they have vastly overenrolled during the pandemic and cannot handle the number of students they already have. Academic, practicum and master's thesis (CE) advisers do not return emails or process required paperwork for days or weeks (sometimes not at all), have no available appointments for weeks or months, most do not know the program well enough to competently advise students, and they have had a very high turnover in the last year. So many people I know have tales of being ghosted by their advisers. I got into another great MPH school but chose GW in the end because I wanted to work in DC and thought the practicum and connections from GW would be valuable for my career. Huge mistake. Everyone is on their own finding a practicum, and the only suggestions they give you are for full-time, usually unpaid, jobs. I did end up getting a great job after graduation, but not because of anything GW did for me other than putting their brand on my diploma. That is what you are paying for in the end, but in my opinion, that won't be worth much if they keep running the online program the way they have been for the last 2 years. Incredibly frustrated and disappointed. I'm in my last term and can't wait to be done with this whole experience. I ended up with a 4.0, but I did not get the experience I thought I was paying for. GW needs to stop enrolling so many students to make money, hire more competent advisers, and start actually delivering on the promises they advertise all over the internet.

I’m writing a review for the online MPH@GW program. I took classes part time at night while working full time from 2015-17. I felt compelled to write this review in light of online learning being the new staple of COVID-19 restrictions. When I started coursework in 2015, this program was still pretty nascent, but steadily improved as I continued. To me that’s absurd, but many online degree programs are still like that. MPH@GW courses had professionally filmed lectures (ie, in a studio and not just a camera at the back of a lecture hall), and on the Adobe Connect platform, broken out into separate video modules with interspersed questions, reading, and interactive content (as opposed to one extended take you just watch). The lectures had closed captioning and transcriptions and had adjustable playback speed. This meant we had deaf students in our cohort that could fully participate the program, and those features were great for note taking too or speeding up a slow-speaking lecturer. We had all the usual assignments and exams, which the platform handled well in my opinion. Then, my favorite, and what really made the program comparable to non-online offerings, weekly we had a discussion section with a PhD-level TA where everyone was on video. I really felt like I got to know and form bonds with my teachers and classmates this way. One became a future colleague and I was able to recognize her because we had actually seen/heard each other (vs just a name on a discussion post). I’m able to work from home at this time and let me tell you that being on many poorly run Zoom meetings these days makes me miss how seamless and effective my MPH@GW classes were with Adobe Connect! Sure, there were glitches from time to time, but we were all pretty comfortable since we used it a couple hours each week. I lived in the DC area but appreciated not having to add a commute to go to class after a long work day. I also appreciated that online students were allowed to take in-person courses if desired. Now the cons- there are disadvantages to not directly interacting with the professors (ie, us watching pre-taped videos of them v being in the same room and getting to ask questions during and after class), especially if you want to form relationships for research. Some did take the time to attend the TA-led video discussions but it’s not the same as regular interaction and networking. Second, GW is horrifically expensive if you’re not receiving financial aid and there is no discount for being an online student. I was only able to attend because I had assistance from my employer. You need to look at the total cost and seriously consider if the institution’s reputation is worth the price tag. Thirdly, there were required classes I took that were so-so or poorly taught. The program was good at soliciting feedback so I hope our comments led to improvements on those since I left. The practicum entry and management system is not very good, but that issue is not limited to online students. Overall however, my impression is that this is one of the better online programs out there. It’s clear they were very invested and thoughtful in it developing well and there was good support (I hope that’s still the case), just a couple examples: I always knew I could reach out and get any academic or billing questions answered or issues resolved, my advisor regularly reached out via phone and email, the school regularly sent out communications and organized events to connect online students and create networking opportunities for us (although for those out-of-state, more virtual offerings would have been good). Yes the price tag stinks, but it’s great that we got the exact same teachers and degree as those attending in-person. (vs something like the University of Maryland, who has a separate school for online learning called UMUC [now UMGC] whose degrees, reputation, and course rigor are certainly not the same as the parent school). This program let me achieve the career advancement I was seeking while continuing to work full time, and on my recommendation 3 other colleagues in my office enrolled. We had plenty of healthcare professionals around the country in my cohort as well. If you can swing the cost, it’s a convenient and well run offering.

The college offers plenty of opportunity for students to make the best of earning a credible education. I presume the public health topics discussed in the courses were also discussed in other public health programs at different universities. However, GWU also offered practicum experiences, research opportunities, and relationships with organizations within and around the community for internship opportunities. These opportunities contribute to student being able to not only gain experience in the... Read More field of their study, but to also work on building a network, which is important when exploring job opportunities. The only thing potential student should be aware of is this institution is far from being affordable. This is one of the most expensive institutions in the nation! Keep that in mind if you're taking out student loans! The scholarships the school offered were not highly advertised and not easy to get. Even for me as a veteran. My overall debt shot up significantly due to the loans I took out at this university.

The MPH program in Environmental Health Science and Policy at the George Washington University is an outstanding program. The departmen's faculty and staff care about the students and their education. I received a lot of guidance from my advisors in terms of class selection and during the culminating experience. I really enjoyed studying public health at GWU. Classes are rigorous and require a lot of outside study and class prep, but you are very well prepared to be a successful professional in public health. Due to the fact that we are in DC, students have the opportunity (and are encouraged) to attend Senate hearings, Supreme Court cases, and events at Smithsonians and government facilities that pertain to public health. Students are encouraged to do internships at the premier agencies and organizations... Read More in DC. This degree will not only challenge you but support you and teach you how to be a leader within the public health community. I am graduating this coming May and feel extremely prepared for any job or higher education in the public health arena that comes my way.

The MPH@GW program is George Washington's online MPH program. The program is designed to accommodate students who are working and going to school at the same time. I enjoy the flexibility of the program as well as the convenience of the online format. The teachers have impressive experiences in the public health field and are easy to connect with via email and conference call sessions.
