Degree: Social Work

Do not pursue your MSW at this school. The social work department is highly unorganized and severely lacks communication skills. Many students are left in the dark, told conflicting information, and concerns rarely ever addressed. Several professors who teach online courses are lazy, unprofessional and fail to effectively communicate with their students. Group projects in the online programs are heavy, which have been a very challenging experience in that they are inadequate for an online environment.... Read More

TERRIBLE COMMUNICATION. If you live outside the DFW area, do not choose this program. They are a nightmare to deal with when it comes to speaking to anyone about placement. You are required to find your own placement if you live outside of the DFW area, but they do not inform you of how to do this and their communication is awful. You can call for weeks straight and they won't answer the phone or call you back. Automatic replies in e-mail are very common, so don't expect to get real answers from... Read More

UTA is diverse and inclusive. I was more closely involved in Student Activities at UTA than I was at my undergraduate, but because I worked there. It can be hard to plug in for commuter students, but the staff does try. I had amazing professors in my Social Work and Public Administration programs.

Good location with a lot of possibilities for internships in multiple fields. Organized departments that make a large school feel small and intimate. Lots of activities to participate in at school and around the area. Main negative as with any large school is lack of parking.

The University of Texas at Arlington does a great job of preparing students to excel in their career directly upon graduation. During the course of the program students will engage in both internships and on-campus job training that will prepare them for employment immediately upon graduation. The professors are very engaging and are readily available to assist students to ensure we succeed. The program is very flexible also due to the fact that they offer both in-class and online courses. Interesting school and great social work program. Professors are kind, yet challenging. Easy to develop relationships & very fulfilling field to get into!

College life was expensive but a great place to attend. It felt like home away from home. Plenty of things to do in the city.

UTA is primarily a commuter college. It is definitely not a party school. Academics is the priority. It can be a little hard to make friends because of the large commuter population therefore make sure you plug yourself into organization and groups. I myself joined one organization, The Christians on Campus. They were very welcoming and have several events throughout the semester you can attend a well as weekly Bible studies. This helped me get to meet like minded people. uta is a diverse school... Read More

If you are considering earning a Masters degree in Social Work, you may want to steer clear of UTA. If you are a highly motivated and conscientious student, look elsewhere. Most professors require group work, which can frustrating because this program attracts slackers. In addition, many of the professors seem disconnected and can be non responsive to student emails or concerns. Some are downright scattered and disorganized. This program is terrible, and it has been very disappointing experience.... Read More

Great school near two big cities. Diverse opportunities. I am interested in research and have been able to find great mentorship. I have worked while being in school and have liked the option of taking classes online and in person. The Social Work program has been great!

I am currently in the MSW program with a concentration of Direct Practice with Children and Families. I am three semesters into the program, having just finished my 1st summer semester of the program & overall, I do enjoy the program. Some professors are more rigorous than others, yet most that I have been assigned to in the program so far have been very responsive & helpful to students in the program. Advisors could be more helpful and organized because there has been some confusion every semester... Read More

The teachers are really good, but the administration is terrible. Advisors contradict themselves and each other and the field placement office is inept. If you go by a nickname and not your given name, your instructors will never learn your preferred name. Steer clear.

Great opportunity to be attending The University of Texas at Arlington. The Social Work department is doing their best to meet the needs of their students. A lot of supportive groups and help is always near. Graduate students are allowed to select their field placement, well, it depends if it is available. Apply early or as soon as you are eligible. Always be your own advocate, a lot of students wait or register late, try and get your registration early in order to get preferred courses. I do hope... Read More

The school is fabulous. The career support, mentors and administrators are supportive and helpful. It's not located in the best area which account for the lower ratings in surrounding area and social life scores. I am happy that I made the decision to attend this institution.

I am in the Masters Social Work program for mental health. I am two semesters into the program and so far the program has delivered. It helps to think out of the box and forces to get out of anyone's comfort zone. In social work there will sometimes come a situation in which our ethics will question how to help a client dilemma. It has taught me how to narrow the process of finding solutions for a client and for the client to become independent to their future decisions.

This program has great professors that are extremely knowledgeable in the social work field. The social work program is a great place to build relationships with future master social workers.

The pros of my graduate program are: Flexible class schedule that allow for a part-time job. I also like that I am able to attend as an Advance Standing student to finish my MSW degree within a year. The cons are: To the best of my knowledge, there is no scholarship to attain from the social work department to help with supplement my loan.

The UTA Social Work program is wonderful! I have learned so much and feel more competent as a social worker from my experience in the MSW program. The professors are mostly down-to-earth and recognize and respect the fact that not everyone learns from "just read the chapter and take a test". I have made professional connections, gained real-life experience, learned from experts in the field, and have received training that is extremely applicable to my work now and in the future. UTA is definitely diverse and the workload can be both challenging but possible. However, there are campus safety concerns that have more to do with the neighborhood than the quality of officers.
