I have previously received my undergraduates from UMUC, and while the program could use some updating in terms of materials utilized in its courses overall my experience has been great. Communication between student-and-professor can be shoddy, albeit not to the fault of the university. The courses at UMUC require a lot of self-study and personal time management, lending most of the effort required to do well in your courses to you and not so much the professor or even the materials provided. Read More being said, the information I gained from my courses were extremely relevant to my newly obtained career field, and the degree I presently hold from UMUC (as well as the level of study I've reached in my pursuit of a master's) has made large improvements to my work prospects. Again I reiterate -- UMUC requires a lot more effort on the individual's part than other more traditional universities. The trade-off in being able to gain an education while traveling for work or personal purposes is that of increased self-reliance. From my personal experience you get out of it what effort you put in.

Compared to other online schools that I've tried I feel like UMUC courses are well-structured with their modules and the notifications of due dates, updates to grades. The discussion forums are annoying because you don't get any updates so you have to go into each post to see if anyone replied to you. In the era of Facebook and Instagram I feel like they should get better at having some real-time updates to make the conversations less phony and more engaging. I took an undergrad accounting course... Read More and a graduate financial management course. For the undergrad course I felt like it was decent enough for a freshman level course. I felt like the graduate level financial management course needed a text book. We got a list of a bunch of random websites to teach us stuff off the internet; I have no idea what I just learned or how to fit it all together - just a bunch of details from a lot of random websites. This is why textbooks are used! the school tries to avoid textbooks which is a cool idea but that doesn't mean they couldn't find a free book that students could rent from the UMUC library. I think that these courses are more of a 'program' - you don't really learn anything form the professor. The feedback is a joke, you get like a sentence. I literally learned nothing from my graduate level professor. I didn't feel like $2,000 was work the cost of the courses other than I have no other options but online school. If i could I would go to a school that was more rigorous, reputable, and valuable. I think in the end all I really wanted was some accounting courses under my belt so I could get an entry-level accounting job. I think with a means to an end, if you are not trying to work in a Fortune 500 company, these courses are good enough for someone who doesn't have the opportunity to go to a competitive graduate school that doesn't accept literally anyone with a bachelor's degree. I was irritated with the project in the Fin Management course - it required a team of 5-6 people work together with their archaic discussion forums (no real time updates). Thank god for Google Hangouts and Google Drive. I have no idea how other teams did it without knowing about those programs. I felt like we were not prepared in any way on how to do the project; everything with this course was just... figure it out yourself by googling it kind of thing. I definitely am just going to only complete the undergrad pre-requisite courses to the accounting/fin management masters degree and then leave and get a job because I don't think the entire degree is worth my time.

The school's online learning portal also so known as LEO is an interactive online learning platform that provides a classroom learning environment with effective online learning tools that is comparable with almost all browsers and operating systems, thereby creating an unforgettable online learning experience. The school's faculty are will trained and ready to assist students especially at difficult moments. It's military student advising department is incomparable to none i have ever witnessed. They provide timely educational and career advise and assist student in making the right academic and financial enrollment decisions. UMUC does not only offer rich carrier enhancing academic programs, they also seek career enhancing opportunities for it's students by identifying and publishing job openings and training opportunities. This fact makes the institution not just an educator, but also an opportunity seeking institution for it's students. It's flexible interest free tuition payment plan is second to none. The institution work with its students to develop a conducive interest free tuition payment plan that makes tuition payment stress free. At this point, what more can you ask of a university? UMUC is undoubtedly the best educational institution i will advice and encourage any working class and military members to attend whether home, abroad or deployed.

I am attending UMUC to earn my Master's degree in accounting and financial management. I attend UMUC exclusively online which allows me to work full time and balance my family of six at home! The flexibility of being able to "attend" class during my free time is priceless. The education I am receiving is also invaluable. Read More books to buy in undergraduate or graduate courses! This is really something to take into account when deciding which school to attend. My local community college has cheaper tuition for undergrad courses, however the books I needed to buy were as much as 475$ each! Overall, I love the easy access and valuable education received here.

My graduate program help me understand my profession from different perspectives of people who use the information that accountants generate and how accountants ethical decision making impacts everyone. The program gives you more of the business side and not just the accounting side allowing the student to become well rounded with the profession. The cons to the program was the team assignments I understand we all have to work in teams together however, trying to do the team assignments online created... Read More some challenges but so far I have gotten through them.

The ongoing disaster that is UMUC Financial Aid continues unabated. This semester, they applied everybody's loans & grants too early. They then placed financial aid refund holds on everybody's accounts to prevent refunds from being processed.

Next step? Reverse all of the transactions, so that students have overdue balances again. In the process, they have managed to cancel financial aid awards altogether, so now I have an overdue balance and I have no financial aid. They assure me that this will... Read More be fixed by Monday.

Given that they screw this up EVERY semester, they'll have to pardon me if I don't believe them. If you are dependent on financial aid, RUN, do not walk, away from this place.
