Western Governors University was a great school and experience for me. It allowed me to learn at my own pace to ensure I comprehended what I was studying. It offered many different avenues of self study including video recorded classes. The courses also provided real world experience which I was able to use to understand my job better.

I recently started a Master’s degree program at WGU, and though I’m not the type to write reviews usually, in this case I feel the need to warn people away. I earned my Bachelor’s from WGU a few years ago, so I’m quite familiar with the school and how it works, but I was shocked how much the quality has nosedived in the intervening years. I know people are prone to complaining that something is bad because it was too difficult; that is not this review. I started in the IT Management program and one... Read More

WGU is a competency-based college. The goal
is to leverage your expertise and knowledge to apply and demonstrate it in the coursework. The structure is self-paced and those who are self-motivated, disciplined in their ability to dedicate hours to the process will succeed. If you need a more structured environment, this may not be the college for you. Instructors don’t hold your hand and while they give good feedback, the expectation is you follow the outlined rubric and study on your own.

I graduated from WGU in 2021, and it changed my life. The competency-based curriculum enabled me to get an accredited college degree on my time. The course work was no joke, but I put in my hours up front and was able to graduate within one semester. This was made possible using my pre-existing general education credits and professional experience. I was fully employed five months after graduating with a job that paid 2.5x what I was making before, and that was just the beginning!

WGU was a great experience. The self-paced model truly helped me manage being a full-time employed professional, parent and student. The most helpful aspect of this was the ability to study the course materials when I had the time, whether it be nights or weekends, I could work on the course material for an hour or several hours at a time. The student interface learning environment was user friendly. I would love to attend WGU again should a Doctoral program be introduced.

I recently completed a certificate course called "Business Leadership Certificate" that consisted of three comprehensive classes: Fundamentals for Success in Business, Values-Based Leadership, and Organizational Leadership. Despite putting in the effort and successfully finishing all the coursework, I discovered that a certificate of completion is not available. This has left me feeling quite confused and a bit deflated. I hope WGU will provide printable certificates in the future.

Buy a $2,000 Course Here That Cannot Be Completed!!!!
I purchased this course for my girlfriend to learn the fundamentals for book keeping, accounting, spread sheets, an quick books. After she got through her first segment and it came time to test they were unable to get a proctor. After three hours of them trouble shooting and remote accessing my desktop they were unable to rectify the situation. This was after spending an additional $100 on required peripherals for the course (MIC, webcam, etc...).... Read More

Horrible! Why do you need clinical for a BSN program, when your already a RN??? Not majoring in nurse informatics and they make you take a nurse informatics course that is extremely hard, failed it twice, I don’t recommend this school, I wish I went somewhere else

I love WGU is a great University fully accredited! Is affordable and is perfect for someone who work FT and is looking to develop it self. I completed a BS and an MBA and it was the best decision ever. I loved that I didn’t needed to complete weekly discussions. Your progress depends on you.

If you are looking for an opportunity to fast-track your degree while earning industry recognized certifications, this is the prefect degree path and school for you. A few words of caution to readers who are concerned about many of the 1-star reviews: - WGU is designed for students who can function 100% independently. Mentors can be a mixed bag, good or bad, and have the main function of keeping you on track with course work through bi-weekly calls. They also help you understand administrative procedures,... They put me in the wrong version of a course and didn't catch it until I had completely finished the class. I still needed the class but they wouldn't grade what I turned in and said I had to redo everything for the new version. This was at the end of my term. To make up for it they requested an extension. I was told on the 4th that I was approved for a 7 day extension to do everything. However the extension started on the 1st. So I did a whole class I didn't need, at no fault of my own, and I effectively... Read More

WGU did not provide me enough support during my time student teaching. I attempted to change my Dt start date and the field experience team was impossible to reach and unhelpful. there were many aspect of the experience that were not communicated well to me and I had to spend thousands of dollars for another term, I had everything completed but I needed one more day for field experience, and instead of finding a reasonable way to fix that I of course had to give them more money for another term.... Undergraduate and graduate accounting courses use learning materials not tied to the final exams. Each time, WGU admitted they were aware of the problem and were working on a fix. They were slow fixing the problems however which costs the student $.

The first part of my experience at WGU was positive. In the beginning, it worked well because the classes are self paced and I was able to complete them in my own time. Navigating the home page and submitting assignments was easy. However, this school lacks transparency and honesty with their students. When I was applying, there was no mention of clinical hours and I chose this program because it was a great option for me with a full time job. I specifically asked about clinical hours because I knew... Read More

I would not waste your time or money. After $10K I have nothing to show for it, and it’s not for lack of effort. I busted my butt in every single class, like most other people. I work a full time job, try to maintain a normal life, and study as much as possible. 1 class kept me from getting my degree, 1. I attempted to take the exam 3 times, and it didn’t matter if it would’ve been an open book exam, the material never matched what I was studying. The PA was zero help and didn’t even line up slightly... Read More

Okay, well I do not want to repetitive but this school is one of the worst in terms of getting any form of education well in my experience education for elementary teacher preparation. They expect you to grasp a whole semester’s worth of knowledge and implement it to a final exam, now I know this is common even in a normal campus but in a normal campus you do not have a person staring at you while you take a test. That’s one the least ignorant things of this school, in this school a C grade is not... Read More

I had high hopes for this school. I have an associates degree, worked full time in a school environment in a non-certified paraprofessional position (and had for over a decade at the time I was a student), and thought it would be a good way to finish my Bachelors while still working full-time. What a waste of time. First, let’s talk about the courses themselves. It’s a compilation of summarized information from websites, a bunch of links to other websites (some of them are broken), and I can tell... Read More

This school is a joke. I have an associates degree from a prior college. When it came time to transfer they did not take all my credit. I basically started over again with them. I had medical term already from my previous college that I graduated from and they didn’t even except, biology and lab as well and they would not take it. There were some other healthcare classes I took at the college I got my associates degree from that they said I needed but would not transfer over. There grading system... Read More
