What the Data Reveals About The Most Popular Online Doctoral Business Degrees

As more professionals seek out flexible, high-level credentials to advance their careers, the demand for online doctoral degrees in business, especially the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) and related leadership doctorates, continues to grow.

Our analysis focuses on 15 of the most popular online business doctoral programs, ranked by the highest number of graduates per program. We decided on this metric because graduate volume can signal institutional stability, strong support systems, and the presence of a thriving online learning community.

Across this list, most programs graduate fewer than 50 students per year, reflecting the specialized and rigorous nature of doctoral business education. Yet some, like Liberty University and Columbia Southern University, graduate significantly more.

Typically, business doctoral programs that graduate large numbers of students have refined their curriculum, strengthened their faculty infrastructure, and built expansive professional networks. These are online schools where peer interaction is rich, support services are tested, and alumni outcomes are trackable.

Recommendation Rates: A Critical Data Point from Real Students

Student recommendation rates offer a more personal and revealing metric: how many students and alums would actively endorse the program to others. Based on over 90,000 student survey responses collected over the years, the recommendation rates from our list above range from 50% to 96%, exposing wide disparities in satisfaction levels among students.

Take Wilmington University (WilmU), for instance. With a standout 96% recommendation rate and a 12:1 student-to-faculty ratio, it signals not just high academic caliber, but a student-centered learning experience that inspires graduates to vouch for the program.

By contrast, schools like the University of the Southwest (USW) and Touro University Worldwide (TUW) report recommendation rates closer to 50-57%. While still popular in terms of online enrollment, these lower rates suggest greater variability in how students perceive the overall value of their experience.

Key Differences in Format and Focus

While all schools on this list offer business doctorates, the structure and specialization of these programs vary widely:

Flexible Formats

Capella University’s FlexPath allows self-paced study

Liberty University enables 50% credit transfer and no GRE

The University of Phoenix embeds the dissertation from day one

Unique Specializations

The University of the Southwest offers a Self-Design DBA track

Concordia Chicago has a Strategic Leadership and Innovation concentration

UC Cumberlands offers Blockchain and Project Management tracks

Non-traditional Dissertation Alternatives

California Intercontinental University replaces the dissertation with a Doctoral Research Project

Touro University Worldwide emphasizes applied projects over dissertations

The University of the Incarnate Word lets students present research in conferences or peer-reviewed journals

All of these program-specific differences will impact your educational journey. While some emphasize taking on a niche right away, other programs are more geared toward practitioner-leaders who want to immediately apply insights to their organizations.

Cohort-based models, like those used at WilmU and UMGC, foster long-term peer engagement and simulate the kind of executive teamwork you'll encounter in senior leadership roles, creating built-in networks that often extend beyond graduation.

Other programs with a strong emphasis on professional relevance include Regent University’s DSL in HR Development and the University of Charleston’s Executive Leadership doctorate.

"There are various reasons why professionals pursue a doctorate in business, but they all seem to be reduced to a will to develop as an individual and as a professional. It is viewed by many people as a means of becoming an expert in a certain area, be it leadership, strategy or management. To others, it is about shattering the glass ceiling, getting high ranking executive jobs or making it into the academic world. Other people might opt to take the route as it exposes them to competitive industries with more pay prospects and presents them with the chance to do some exclusive consulting.

The future of business research is in such emerging fields as digital transformation and sustainability.

The future of business research is in such emerging fields as digital transformation and sustainability. These disciplines are defining how businesses are dealing with the world issues and changing.

In choosing a PhD or DBA, it all boils down to purpose.

  • The PhD in business is strongly based on the theoretical research, stretching the academic knowledge to its limits. It is an excellent choice to people who want to do research or teaching as a career.
  • Conversely, a DBA is more pragmatic, and its emphasis is on the implementation of research to business issues. Individuals who pursue a DBA usually remain active in senior jobs and carry out applied research with a real world effect.

Online programs have now evolved much in facilitating the dissertation or applied project work. Most of them provide mentorship, online materials, and the opportunity to match career and school life. This makes the students feel supported when they shift theoretical knowledge to practice."

EXPERT TIP

"I suggest to people who begin an online doctorate program to remain in touch with their mentors and peers. Developing connections via virtual conferences and meetings can be a great support and present opportunities in the future."

Student Reviews of Online Business Programs

LKS, Graduated 2021

Attended: Baker College Online

The online platform is not for everyone. Students need to be self-motivated to be able to thrive. No one is going to hold your hand to tell you that you missed class or missed a deadline for an assignment. So, you really have to be motivated to do these things by yourself. However, if you need help, they offer it. Tutoring Services is offered free for every student, and Career Counseling is hard to beat. I feel like I got out of the program everything I sought, and I am really happy with the outcome.... Read More

As a doctoral student in the School of Business Management, I have been impressed with the high calibre design of their online course rooms, and the quality program curriculum. The PHD program instructors seek performance excellence from their students. The doctoral programs are further in business enhanced by the addition of in-person onsite residencies.

Thus far, I have found Columbia Southern University to be great! I am in the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) program at CSU online, and have really learned a great deal in all of my classes and from my classmates. The instructors and staff there are very responsive and supportive, and my classmates have been great as well. I would recommend CSU to others!

I work full-time and wished to earn my PhD part-time. Capellas business doctoral program (PhD) was by far my best choice. Heres why: **Why I'm happy I went with an online PhD program ** 1. You're in control. You decide the pace and course load (1-3 courses/ semester). It costs a maximum of $5,000/quarter. If you need to, you can take a quarter off. I feel relieved knowing that it'll work *with* my busy schedule (not against it). 2. You may be eligible for tuition reimbursement through your employer.... Read More

Walden University is extremely diverse. Students have an opportunity to interact with staff and students from every part of the world at required residencies and in classroom discussion boards. The curriculum is focused, and challenging. Students with multi-tasking and self-starter skills are likely the most successful at Walden. The tuition is very expensive, and has caused me to exhaust my financial aid loan lifetime limits. I've completed all coursework and I am at the end of my doctoral program,... Read More

I completed the doctoral program (DBA) at CalU 5 years ago and can attest to the benefits of this school & CalU's program design. I found both the rigor and depth of each course to match or exceed similar courses in other programs with universities that are 'regionally accredited' or referred to as 'brick and mortar' schools. As for "regionally accredited" schools, I hold an M.Ed from University of Virginia in Charlottesville VA, an MBA from Marymount University in Arlington VA, and finalizing my... Read More

Just like you, I was interested in reading current and former students' opinions of their experience at NCU. I can tell you that you will hear a TON of negative reviews. Yes, the graduation rate is lower in general for PhD programs than the national standard (37% versus 57% in 2005). But just keep in mind that not everyone is cut out to earn a PhD. It is supposed to be hard! Don't let that deter you from choosing this school. If you are looking for a solid education with amazing support staff and... Read More

I earned my Doctorate degree from California Intercontinental University in May 2018. I feel the course materials were rigorous and challenging. The dissertation and defense portion of the doctoral process allowed me to experience the rigors of deep reasesrch. I feel the education and support I received at CIU was well worthwhile. I recommend the course to anyone having doctoral aspirations. The university also supported me financially by recognizing my military contribution.

I have received my Bachelors, MBA and am in my Dissertation phase of the PhD program at Capella. Capella's professors provide you with a list of assignments, due dates and expectations upon beginning the classes. Participation is graded up to 50% percent of your grade but if you read carefully the requirements of the participation then you can easily nail that 50%. The professors are great, very knowledgeable and supportive of students. However, the administrative personnel/associates like the academic and financial advisors are poor communicators. This is a school for employed, computer literate people who have busy lives outside of school. The staff is very supportive.
