Analyzing Our List of Popular Online MFT Degrees

Popularity among online master’s in marriage and family therapy (MFT) programs is a helpful, practical signal of student trust in a field that depends heavily on clinical access and professional networking.

Across the 14 MFT programs in our analysis, the largest institutions — Capella University, Touro University Worldwide (TUW), and UMass Global — produce nearly 60% of all recent MFT graduates who studied online. This can translate to stronger practicum partnerships, more opportunities for alumni mentorship in this field, and general employer familiarity.

These programs typically have the infrastructure to support high volumes of online learners while maintaining consistent supervision standards and licensure guidance. For new therapists entering a profession where every state requires licensure and hundreds of supervised client hours, that level of institutional support can directly impact how smoothly graduates move from coursework to clinical practice.

Overall, it's a good time to pursue this master's program. The Bureau of Labor Statistics () projects 13% job growth for marriage and family therapists though 2034, which is far faster than the national average of 3% across all U.S. occupations. Growth is being fueled by the nationwide shift toward integrated behavioral healthcare, where MFTs collaborate with other specialists to treat clients holistically.

Below, we delve further into the data and program details of the online marriage and family therapy master's programs from our list of schools above. We will discuss program-specific earnings alongside the national data in this field as well as our proprietary student recommendation rates. We want you to have all the facts so you can make the most informed decision for your higher education journey.

Early-Career Earnings: What the Data Reveals About MFT Graduate Pay

Looking at earnings four years after graduation gives an unusually clear picture of how quickly MFT alumni start building financial momentum.

Among the MFT programs that report outcomes, early-career medians range from $71,407 at the University of Southern California (USC) and $67,664 at Alliant International University (AIU) to $67,323 at Loma Linda (LLU), $54,422 at Capella (CU), and $52,004 at University of Holy Cross (UHC).

These figures are program-specific, often reflecting each school’s regional labor markets, practicum partnerships, and alumni employment patterns. They don’t describe the entire profession, but they do show where graduates are landing financially during their first few post-licensure years.

To frame those numbers, the BLS reports a (May 2024) for all marriage and family therapists, with a wide spread depending on work setting:

State government (non-hospital) – $89,030

Outpatient care centers – $73,230

Individual and family services – $59,550

Offices of other health practitioners – $59,010

These BLS figures cover therapists at all career stages, while the dataset we use for program-specific alums captures graduates just four years out, often still completing supervised hours or transitioning to independent licensure. It’s normal, then, for early-career pay to fall slightly below the national median before rising with experience, caseload volume, and specialization.

Several factors explain why certain schools’ earnings rise faster than others, however.

  • Degree alignment plays a major role

Programs that channel graduates into outpatient or state-agency roles tend to track closer to the top BLS tiers, while those emphasizing community and family services hover near the $59k range.

  • Licensure design also matters.

COAMFTE or CACREP-accredited pathways, dual-licensure options (like LMFT + LPCC/CMHC), and programs that let students accumulate pre-graduation hours often help graduates qualify for full licensure — and higher pay — more quickly.

  • Geography is another driver.

The schools based in high-wage regions, such as California (USC, AIU, LLU), tend to report stronger early outcomes than programs drawing from more geographically diverse, lower-wage states like CU or UHC.

What Students Say About Their Experience

Across more than 90,000 verified surveys we've collected, the online schools on this list show high satisfaction overall, with an average 78% recommendation rate.

Some schools stand out for exceptional satisfaction — USC (94%), Palo Alto (93%), Loma Linda (91%), and Alliant (87%) — while others hold steady majorities that still reflect a solid student experience.

Why pursue an MFT degree online?

"The most common motivation for professionals to pursue an online MFT degree is the flexibility it provides.

Many aspiring therapists have very busy lives, they might work full time, have kids, be caretakers or already work in the mental health field in another capacity. The beauty of an online program is that is can fit into a variety of schedules and cutout the wasted time of a commute."

MFT's need to excel at holding boundaries, staying curious and being non-judgmental.

How is technology changing the way MFTs can deliver care?

"Technology has rapidly changed the therapy field in the past few years. Telehealth is now much more common accepted, even by insurance companies. There are also many AI tools therapists can use to ease the burden of note-taking and admin work."

What skills are most important for success in the field of marriage and family therapy?

"The most important skills to have as an aspiring MFT would be the ability to see things from multiple perspectives, stay unbiased, and create rapport with multiple people in a family unit. MFT's need to excel at holding boundaries, staying curious and being non-judgmental. The ability to see things from a systems perspective can be helpful, because families are parts of a whole."

FAQs About Online MFT Master's Programs

What Can You Expect From an Online Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy Program?

A master's program in MFT covers theoretical, clinical, and research practices associated with providing professional therapy to couples and families. With the traditional nuclear family becoming less common, students learn how to work with individuals from a range of relational contexts. Coursework and practical hours, in turn, train graduates in techniques meant to help families face life changes, mental health issues, or other challenging circumstances.

An online master's in MFT is designed to prepare students for a career in counseling and equip graduates with the necessary knowledge and experience to take state licensure exams.

Being accepted into an MFT program may be slightly more difficult when compared to other postbaccalaureate disciplines because students may have to meet unique criteria, such as demonstrating their prior real-world experience in the field. While each school typically sets its own admission requirements for graduate school, some competitive MFT counseling programs expect applicants to pass an interview and have a minimum B grade in child development, sociology, or counseling at the undergraduate level. In general, students will need to meet the following conditions in order to apply to an MFT master's program:

  • A bachelor's degree in psychology or a related field with a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • 2-5 letters of recommendation describing the candidate's ability to achieve a graduate MFT credential, along with a personal statement or essay
  • GRE scores in at least the 50th percentile for each of the verbal, quantitative, and writing sections

What Courses Are Included in an Online Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy Program?

The curriculum for an online MFT master's includes classes in psychology, sociology, and clinical research, to name a few. In some cases, students can elect coursework that covers the legal and ethical aspects of providing therapy in familial settings, as well as the challenges associated with serving vulnerable populations. They may also choose classes that focus on specializations — such as medication, substance abuse, and sexuality — while developing skills in communication, research, and negotiation. Below is a list of courses students can expect to take in an MFT master's program.

  • Couples Therapy: Students take this class to prepare for treating couples undergoing marital or premarital conflict. They familiarize themselves with various theoretical perspectives, drawing on research-based methods to understand different forms of intervention. This class may also cover how relationships between couples have changed over time.
  • Group Counseling for Children and Adolescents: This elective course focuses on group therapy and emphasizes working with children, adolescents, and their families. Students study how to manage and lead group sessions to address the environmental, behavioral, and cognitive factors shaping relationships between siblings and parents. Learning techniques may include role-playing, mock interviews, traditional lectures, and discussion.
  • Medical Family Therapy: When families face challenging medical circumstances, a trained MFT professional helps them address difficult emotions and practical considerations. Students in this class train in family systems theory, learning how to support individuals coping with a loved one's illness or navigating palliative care.
  • Psychopathology and Diagnosis: Students enrolled in this course may practice how to diagnose a range of mental health disorders. This includes learning how to identify unique behavior related to schizophrenia, bipolarism, and depression, while also treating individuals through a mixture of medication and therapy.
  • Trauma and Crisis Counseling: This class focuses on the psychology of trauma, particularly as it relates to factors such as abuse and neglect. In addition to learning how these challenges affect everyday behavior in adults, adolescents, and children, students focus on remedying specific conditions, such as post-traumatic stress disorder.

What Clinical Training Is Required in an Online Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy Program?

Students complete roughly 500 supervised clinical hours as part of an MFT master's degree. This involves interacting directly and indirectly with patients in various clinical settings — such as interviews, assessments, and interventions. In general, full-time MFT master's students spend 20 hours a week completing practicum requirements.

Many online MFT programs help distance learners gain placement at a clinic in their area of residence. Online students typically research where they can complete practicum hours before working with a dedicated faculty member during the application process. It's important to note that some programs may expect online learners to make their own practicum arrangements.

What Can You Do With a Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy?

MFTs may work in schools, hospitals, outpatient centers, and private practice clinics. A master's degree in this field — along with licensure — is designed to prepare graduates to offer counseling services to families and couples. They can also pursue careers in individual and family services, an economic sector that added 165,004 jobs in the last 12 months, according to data from , a data analytics company. Specifically, they may find work with or in parts of the country where demand for their services is high — such as California, Massachusetts, and Minnesota.

Below is a list of potential career paths for MFT master's graduates, with salary and job outlook data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS):

  • require licensure and provide short-term, solution-based services to individuals addressing challenges, including alcoholism, mood disorders, or marital distress, to name a few. They typically help children, parents, and couples identify sources of stress and develop coping mechanisms, working one-on-one with clients and in group settings.
  • research the emotional and environmental factors that shape various kinds of human behavior. They publish studies and typically look for ways to improve therapy practices, with some also providing clinical services. While an MFT master's program provides training in psychology, this career requires students to complete a doctoral degree in psychology in most cases.
  • help children and adolescents navigate various social and behavioral challenges. These professionals identify challenges students face, such as neglect and abuse, and provide them with resources for additional support. They also help prepare students for life after high school.
  • play a crucial role in assessing and communicating genetic information to individuals and families, aiding them in making informed decisions about their health and hereditary risks. They collect comprehensive medical histories, evaluate genetic data, and provide counseling on testing options, risks, and benefits. Additionally, genetic counselors offer emotional support to clients affected by test results and stay updated on developments in genetics. These professionals work across various specialty areas, such as prenatal, cancer, and pediatrics, ensuring that clients receive tailored guidance and care based on their specific needs.

How Long Will It Take Until I Can Start Practicing as an MFT?

It can take several years to begin practicing as an MFT after receiving your MFT bachelor's degree. You will likely spend a majority of this time completing a graduate degree — such as a master's — which is a requirement for licensure in all 50 states and typically takes two years of full-time study to complete. Some programs can take longer, depending on the time it takes to meet the clinical hour requirements of your degree program.

After achieving your master's, you will need additional clinical experience completed under the supervision of a designated supervisor. The number of postgraduate hours varies by state but typically falls into the 2,000-4,000 range. Depending on whether you work full- or part-time, it can take an additional 2-3 years to meet this requirement. Once you meet these conditions, you need to prepare for and pass the board exams.

What Is the Job Outlook for Marriage and Family Therapists?

Openings for MFT providers are increasing at a higher rate than other client counseling areas. In turn, the BLS estimates that there will be through the next decade. These findings correspond to data from Burning Glass, which shows that the job outlook for individual and family services is projected to increase by 13% in the next decade. To put this into perspective, the BLS shows that the average growth rate for all occupations is 3%.

What Are the Licensure Requirements for Marriage and Family Therapists?

Licensure helps ensure that practicing MFT professionals are effectively trained to offer counseling services. As of 2009, all 50 states require MFT providers to have this stamp of approval

To apply for licensure, MFT graduates must go through their state's . They need a master's degree and — depending on the jurisdiction — 2,000-4,000 hours of postgraduate clinical experience to meet licensure requirements. Applicants also need to pass board exams and renew their qualification annually, which usually involves completing specific courses and paying a fee. It's important to note that states' licensing boards do not rely on certification from the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy, a professional association that provides resources and information to individuals interested in this field.

One would hope that a school wants to set students up for success and advising is provided from 101-done, meaning first class to graduation. Not, NU-they are genuinely in "it" for the money. Think of it as a corporation and not a school.

PROS: You can work and go to school, COAMFTE certified, and teachers are responsive.
CONS: Required readings/videos are outdated (in my opinion, this violates the Code of Ethics), Advisors do not always respond, professors do not create classes and are moderators more... Read More

I had an exceptional experience with Touro in the MFT program. it is a great fit for working students, single parents, people in rural areas like myself, who do not have access to traditional education options, or anyone who cannot attend traditional classes in person. The overall values of TUW is great however for it being an online school, you would hope they would have a bigger and better with supportive staff especially in your final year. The instructors are fantastic, but the MFT staff could do so much better. It seems very understaffed not as supportive as it could be, lacks in following up meaning when a student has an urgent message to be answered it takes 3 days before hearing back. Currently very frustrated. Technical support is either 0 or 100%. I just spent 30 minutes on hold at first in place to get a recording saying there were technical difficulties and a hang up. All of my professors have been great but some do not have IA support and let's say if I weren't a very good student I wouldn't become a good one through feedback and constructive criticism. I am learning from the materials presented but am very disenchanted with the program right now.

The Marriage and Family program is a quality program and school. It is not easy, but you'll learn a lot. I am just about finished with my second practicum course. If you want to do your MFT coursework here, it is important that you know you will be required to record sessions (audio and video) with your clients. Pros of Capella University= professors are competent in their field and willing to give feedback and support to their students. The admissions and advisors are very helpful and supportive. The online library is extensive. The students give a diverse community in the course rooms. Cons of Capella University= sometimes the course of 10 weeks goes too quickly. If a course as too many students, it is difficult to do group work.

I started with Liberty when they were a little smaller and you felt as though you received more attention from your instructors. Now the school is so big and the professors... Read More
