Ask an Expert About an Online Doctorate in Psychology

To help prospective students understand the nuanced realities of earning a doctorate in psychology online, we spoke with a clinical psychologist and supervisor who provides insight into what it takes and how to navigate choosing the best program for your needs.

Dr. Chelsea Sarai: "Psychology is not something we study from a distance."

Headshot of Dr. Chelsea Sarai

PsyD, Clinical Psychologist

Dr. Chelsea Sarai is a licensed clinical psychologist and founder of the Brentwood Therapy Collective, a Los Angeles-based group practice focused on high-quality therapy for adults and clinical training for emerging therapists. With a doctorate in clinical psychology from Alliant International University and years of experience supervising doctoral trainees, Dr. Sarai is passionate about expanding access to thoughtful, embodied mental health care.

"I'm Dr. Chelsea Sarai, a licensed clinical psychologist and the founder of the Brentwood Therapy Collective, a group practice in Los Angeles specializing in providing therapy for adults and clinical training for budding therapists. I’m passionate about expanding access to high-quality mental health training and am deeply attuned to the unique challenges of gaining a doctoral degree in psychology.

As both a clinician and a clinical supervisor, I’ve seen firsthand how evolving technologies, from teletherapy to digital assessment tools, are reshaping the field."

In your view, what makes psychology uniquely suited, or especially challenging, for doctoral study in an online format?

"Psychology is, at its core, the study of human connection — of how we relate to ourselves and to others. That makes studying it in a digital format both convenient and yet paradoxical. The online format can offer access and flexibility, but it can also create a sense of disconnection in a field that depends so much on presence, attunement, and embodied learning.

I'm curious about how we create depth in a space built for convenience. When done well, online programs must compensate for that absence of physical proximity with intentional design, meaningful mentorship, and opportunities for real-world human contact."

For students considering an online doctorate, how important is the distinction between a PhD and PsyD?

"I think it truly depends on the curriculum that is being offered in both of these programs. PhD programs are notoriously more research oriented and PsyD programs are traditionally more focused on clinical work. One is not better than the other, these programs offer different ways of addressing psychology. When considering a program, it is crucial to envision what you are looking to gain and hopefully that clarity will guide you in your degree choice."

What are the key factors students should consider when evaluating the clinical practicum or internship components?

"When considering a practicum or clinical site, students should not just focus on accumulating hours, but instead focus on which site will help them become the therapist they truly want to be. I believe that high quality supervision and the opportunity to work with a diverse range of clients are an important asset to a practicum site.

Clinical training is about gaining skills but also about developing one's therapeutic presence, style and approach. Something I often remind my mentors is that they are only in training for a few years, hopefully they pick sites that will allow them to be deeply immersed in developing the skills they find truly valuable."

In what ways are emerging trends such as teletherapy and digital tools changing what employers expect from today’s psychology graduates?

"Teletherapy demands a new form of connection, one that I believe research is going to have to catch up with. We need to learn how to read silences through screens and hold space in the absence of physical cues."

"I believe that most employers want psychologists who are not only clinically competent but culturally and technologically fluent since we are living in a society that is quite informed by technology."

What misconceptions do students often have about online psychology doctorates?

"One of the biggest misconceptions is that online learning is easier, more detached, or somehow less serious. In fact, it often requires more structure, more inner discipline, and more initiative. Another myth is that the online format will remove all logistical barriers, when in truth, clinical placements, supervision, and licensure remain very much grounded in the real world. You can study from anywhere, but you still have to show up consistently and relationally."

What advice do you have starting an online doctoral program in psychology?

"Don’t confuse independence with isolation. Even online, you must build your village — mentors, peers, supervisors, colleagues. Psychology is not something we study from a distance. It lives in the body, in the stories we carry, in the relationships we cultivate.

With that being said, being engaged in one's own therapy is my biggest piece of advice for budding psychologists. You cannot guide others through the terrain of their emotional lives without first navigating your own.  Your personal work will not only make you a better clinician; it will anchor you, stretch you, and humble you. The doctoral journey is not just academic, it is deeply personal. And like all journeys of transformation, it’s not meant to be walked alone."

Student Reviews of Online Psychology Programs

Student at CalSouthern, Graduating 2026

Attended: California Southern University

Unfortunately, my experience was marked by unethical grading practices, lack of transparency, and dismissive faculty conduct. For example: One instructor graded against rubrics, provided no meaningful feedback, and used authoritarian tactics to avoid accountability. Attempts to address concerns were met with misleading directions and misuse of authority, leaving students unsupported.

Many peers have considered formal complaints, suggesting ongoing issues. Students deserve respectful engagement and... Read More

Capella is not transparent. When there is a problem you receive absolutely no help. They hire some people that are not qualified to teach. There is administration is careless, uneducated and unhelpful. I received my masters degree in psychology and started my doctorate, but now I am switching departments, because I have already spent a lot of money in the doctoral degree in psychology. I could not be more unhappy!

I have completed a few online degrees and worked in higher education and this is by far the worst learning environment I have had. The library is a canvas course and I am currently in an “interactive” class of one. My resources were poorly explained to me as a new student, there is no such thing as live supports, and the learning systems are lacking.

I have mixed feelings about GCU's PhD program. I have completed all of the core curriculum, but will be withdrawing from GCU before entering the dissertation classes. I obtained my bachelor's and MBA online from two different schools, and the GCU instruction was similar to other schools. The online instructors act more as facilitators, rather than teachers. While this was fine in the other degree programs, this did not really work at GCU with doctoral students taking core courses, while working on... Read More

I rarely write reviews, but I wanted to address some of the misleading reviews and the plethora of unjustified tears that have been shed all over this site. Many of the poor reviews stem from the individual failing to do their research prior to enrolling in a program. For example, the University does not hide the fact that their PhD Psychology program is not APA accredited, and therefore not accepted if one wants to practice as a licensed psychologist. The same goes for the required accreditations... Read More

Northcentral is incredible. I was super nervous prior to attending, but once I started, I immediately understood how lucky I was to be attending. I have jobs and children, so on campus Ph.D. was going to be difficult. I was very hesitant about online programs. Now I am no longer nervous. Furthermore, the one to one instruction is unreal. Use this as a warning. Plan on the career taking an extra year and a few thousand dollars more. Went in after being told it would be 80k and 4 years. Here I am at 94k with Lord only knows how much longer. See the thing is after you are done with academics you will need an extra 4 courses at 3k each. Or maybe 8 because if they need the money they will put you on a "supplemental" course. These are created to help you with the dissertation but who needs 12 weeks to get through 1 chapter? I recently complete Touro University's MFT program and have just been accepted into their doctoral program PsyD. I researched carefully before choosing a university. As a parent and working professional, I needed flexibilty but wanted a solid education. I needed a high level of value and I did not want to graduate with $75+ in loans like so many of my colleagues. My experience with Saybrook is that it is very disorganized. Things change A LOT. Requirements, teachers, other faculty, standards, the online class platform. The general culture is pretty supportive, laid back, and friendly, with looser standards, something like you might expect from a West Coast school teaching transpersonal and humanistic psychology and mind-body medicine. I would rate this college as a C. It has all the stuff to get you a degree in Psychology. Is it the best program? Not by a long shot. It does not prepare you to write the dissertation and does not give you a sturdy foundation in research. I completed all the course work for Psychology/ Criminal Justice and I believe they need more research classes since a PsyD is a research based degree. Capella us a RIP off. I finished the courses for the PhD in 1 1/2 years. I spent the next 2+ years trying to pass the dissertation phase. Also I think they should prepare students at the beginning of the program focusing on the dissertation. The residencies is a waste of time with no help in the process. Each Prodfedor has their own way of completing the format or editing. Then you have to start all over again. Then they change it again. I maxed out of loans.
