I am currently enrolled in the school counseling masers degree program at Lamar University. The program is fully online and very convenient. Each course in the 48 hour program lasts for five weeks. So the student has classes for five weeks and then a one week break before beginning the next course. The material covered is very relevant to school counseling. The professors hold webinars once per week so that the students can interact, learn, and ask questions. Students are expected to post and respond... Each week is clearly laid out so there is not any confusion as to what needs to be accomplished each week. I would highly recommend this program to anyone hoping to become a school counselor.

The main pro that I like about my program is the speed at which the programs is going. I will be finished in 18 months with my Masters Degree of School Counseling. I also like that I am able to take one class at a time and focus on just that one. The price for the course if very reasonable compared to my online bachelor's degree course. My career as an international teacher takes me around the world, so being able to get my graduate degree while traveling was a complete blessing. Lamar is well known throughout Texas for its outstanding programs in teacher education. Ratings about social life don't exactly apply because I am an online student, but I am continually receiving notifications of fun student activities on campus (I wish I was there to join in!). The workload of my program is just about perfect, because it is designed for full-time professionals, so three credits can be taken every five weeks. If I'm ever in need of assistance, Lamar has FABULOUS management personnel who worked with me through all the steps of the application, and have provided me with further contacts if I am ever in need of anything else. Because the Masters in School Counseling is under the Academic Partnerships program, school based financial aid is not offered, only Direct unsubsidized loans, which is not very helpful for students who have already accumulated undergraduate student debt. In the short-term, it leaves me in need of financial aid, because my upcoming position in teaching is more for resume building instead of being a salaried position. In the long-term, the value is high, because the program is far more affordable for Texas residents like myself, and I do not have to pay for room and board.
