Common Master's in Public Health Courses
Public health professionals develop and implement programs designed to promote wellness within their communities and beyond. Master's programs in public health prepare graduates to assume these roles by teaching them the core competencies, foundational knowledge, and analytical skills they need to work both in research and practical environments.
Below are some courses commonly found in an MPH program online or on campus:
Principles of Public Health
One of the first courses in a master's of public health program, this class introduces key topics, such as community and environmental health, social and behavioral determinants of health, epidemiology, biostatistics, and health policy and systems. Case studies provide real-world applications of these concepts and show how they are interrelated.
Biostatistics
With a heavy emphasis on advanced mathematical concepts, this course examines the use of quantitative methods to help solve public health problems. Students use probability, descriptive statistics, inferential statistics, and nonparametric tests to analyze research data that pertains to public health.
Community Health
One of two companion courses that explore major disciplines within public health, a community health course focuses on the socioeconomic, racial, and cultural determinants of a community's health. Coursework also examines the models and programs used to address common concerns.
Environmental Health
The companion to a community health course, an environmental health course informs students about the effects of natural and human-caused conditions on a community's health. Students learn to investigate, analyze, and develop policies and programs considering environmental factors such as air, water, soil, and other physical characteristics that create healthy living environments.
Epidemiology
This introductory course provides a general overview of the causes of diseases, disorders, defects, and injuries that may occur in human populations. Students develop critical thinking skills as they analyze public health problems and evaluate possible interventions and treatments.
How Much Does an Online MPH Degree Cost?
For the most affordable online MPH degrees, the cost of annual tuition ranges from $6,282 to $12,876.
The total cost of an online MPH can vary based on several factors but the most significant is tuition. To get an accurate comparison of tuition fees, students can determine a school's per-credit tuition rate and multiply that by the number of credits required to graduate. Of the 25 schools on our list of most budget-friendly online MPH degrees, the per-credit tuition rates start at $315 and go up to $700, and most programs require 30-50 credit hours.
In addition to tuition, prospective students need to add in the cost of books, supplies, and various fees charged by the school, including application and technology fees. Some students may also need to account for special expenses, including childcare, student loan interest, and travel costs associated with any on-campus residencies or workshops that are a required part of the curriculum.
Funding an Online MPH Program
Students who would like to earn a Master of Public Health degree online have a number of options for funding their education. Most students begin the process by filling out and submitting a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The school or schools they're interested in attending will then provide an offer detailing the types of financial aid that are available. The best options are funding types that don't need to be paid back, which include scholarships, fellowships, and grants offered by universities or private organizations. Some online graduate students may also be able to cover a portion of their educational expenses through teaching assistantships or by engaging in other types of work-study programs. Many students will also be eligible for federal or private loans, but these are less desirable due to the interest that must be paid back.
Because there is a growing need for public health professionals, many organizations offer financial aid for students pursuing degrees in this field.

Student Reviews of Online Public Health Programs
At the masters level I have often come across students and instructors that are not intellectually ready for coursework at the graduate level. While working on discussion posts and peer edits it is clear than SNHU has very low standards for academic writing and research.
The financial aid process is also ridiculous. I have gotten a refund as late as the 7th week of a term. In addition, SNHU reduces financial aid amounts randomly and requesting that they increase your loan amount is basically impossible.... Read More
If you attend this school you must understand that you will have to monitor everything they do financially. Every term you will have to send messages to verify tuition charges etc. The SNHU system doesn’t even allow me to see my account for this term. So I have no clue if my employer funding or aid has gone through.

This university has the worst academic advisors that provided absolutely no assistance during the program. I’m just over a month away from graduation and not a single person has contacted me regarding the process. When I contacted them wondering what was going on, they told me that registration for graduation has already passed and that they were sorry they forgot to reach out to me. I have been there for 3 years. Their goal is to graduate students and they forgot about me. You know who never forgets... Read More

I've had a great experience with Purdue Global. I am in my final term of the MPH program and I couldn't be happier with how things have gone. The coursework is applicable and all of the professors are outstanding. I cannot speak for any other program areas but I would recommend the MPH program 100x over to someone who was interested.

I was a student for a day. I had applied in January 2020, well before my Bachelors graduation from Arizona State University. I needed my official transcripts, so I couldn't complete my application until May 2020. My enrollment counselor had answered all my questions, the most important being if their Master of Public Health degree was accredited. I told told yes. I asked again twice before I completed my application, and then again to clarify a week ago before I finalized all my paper work to get... Read More

I was a student here and finished my degree in 2022. While the instructors and education were decent, please be mindful of financial aid. I am a veteran and submitted my DD214 to receive the veteran discount and in the beginning, they said everything looked good. Then the last month of my degree, all of the sudden there was something wrong with my DD214 (wrong copy). So I provided that copy, then all was good. Then the last week of school, I get a call that they cannot honor the veteran discount... Read More

I have gotten over rough moments in life. My time at Everglades University was profitable. I am better educationally, socially and I consider myself knowledgeable in Public Health and research. Everyone treated me well from the Dean, Dr. Stuard, the financial aid department, The Bursers office and of course admissions was there for me all the way. I hope I make you all proud one day! DO NOT ENROLL IN THE ONLINE PROGRAM!!! Advising is beyond appalling. GWSPH has vastly overenrolled since 2020 and can't deliver what they advertise online. Impossible to finish in one year, very challenging to finish in two. Not enough spots in required classes. Glorified independent study at best. The recorded lectures from GW faculty are fantastic. Most of the section leaders were great except for two during the entire program (one was almost impossible to understand and the other was rude and... Read More

I transferred in general courses from a community college and received my B.S. in Alt. Med. with EU. Then they talked me into pursuing my Master's in Public Health Admin. I really had no complaints about EU until recently and I've been with them since 2014. As soon as I joined the military, my needs changed as did my relationship with the school. I was now in need of a VA Rep. which the school does not offer despite claiming to be military friendly. I don't understand how a school can accept government... Read More

The online MPH program at GWU is great. It allows for flexibility in your schedule while engaging in live, interpersonal classes using your computer and web cam. The course work is challenging and with great advancements in technology it is no different than attending class in person. You are able to join study groups, meet with your academic adviser, have access to career fares, internships and a host of many other opportunities available to traditional students.

This dergrer program is extremely difficult to the point of unfair. I feel like the grading system is aimed to nit pick rather than actually assess the students work. For instance, why havea a due date but mandate an assignment be submitted way before hand or get points taken off; that blows my mind still and Im on my 3rd class. Im at the point of considerating to cut my losses and start from scratch at another school. Though Im still grappling with the fact that an 85 and 90 in my last two classes... Read More

When looking at different schools for a MPH program LECOM was the best fit for me. I decided to receive my MPH to get a better understanding of Public Health in hopes to go to medical school after. I love the teacher to student ratio because you can actually speak to your professor and they know who you are. This program is very flexible and great if you’re working and have a busy life.

Everyone has good and bad experiences, that being said my time at Purdue Global has been a positive one. The only negative I guess I have to say, which has been mentioned by others here is the fact of the one time a week seminar that lasts only an hour. It does seem almost too short to get the information, and when people are asking a million questions during instruction, it makes the end of the seminar rushed to meet the time deadline. I have been fortunate to have instructors stay past the time... Read More

Attended for 7 years straight from my mid twenties into my thirties. As a busy parent, business owner, and part time case worker the steady school schedule was perfect. My weeks over the past several years were easy to follow. The instruction quality was stellar overall. I noticed that many of my professors were not simply instructors in my latter years with Snhu (PhDs). Most if not all, had a presence or worked full time in the fields of their instructor. The staff and the crew of the university are very helpful and guide the students based on their situation and needs. The professors are very helpful and responsive to the needs of the students and help them get on track with their course and their education. Also, the university guides the students in terms of job career and other aspects and with their ASPIRE Program, they help with any situation that the student is facing within the educational aspect as well as life perspectives as well.
