I ran across this site while looking for information on my upcoming intensive week and I must say that I'm a bit surprised at the negative reviews of Liberty University. It has been my experience to have quick responses from all of my professors, when I email them with a question. I have also found the material presented in class extremely informative and helpful. Whenever I have called the counselors for assistance, they were patient and helpful, answering each and every one of my questions, and... Read More leaving no room for confusion. The video teleconferences with the professors and students always stayed on topic and when the students would try to veer off topic, the professor would ask them to hold those questions until the end, once they dismiss the other students. So far, I have nothing but positive comments about the school. I will come back to this site and update my comment after every few semesters, until I graduate.

I had a great experience with the educational aspect of this program. I worked part-time while doing the program and was able to balance work and classes. I also received affirmation from practicum and internship supervisors about how highly prepared I was coming from this program. The biggest challenge was finding a practicum site, which students are required to do on your own. The university will find you two internship placements. The M.Ed. School Counseling program is CACREP accredited (Council... Read More for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs), which is an asset in applying for jobs. I had four interviews and received two employment offers within six weeks of completing the program, with three other interview offers even after I accepted a job. My main reason for writing a review is to express deep concerns about the university president's outspoken political endorsements. As the highest-level representative for a school that advertises a Christ-centered education, his lack of discernment, humility, and wisdom in how he represents the university troubles me. His focus seems to be on promoting a political party regardless of the character of those in the party, and silencing those who speak out against his particular views. Overall, what I tend to tell people is that I had a great experience with the course material, professors, and preparation for the job market, but I can't wholeheartedly recommend this university due to the president's lack of distinction between a Christian university and a political party.

Liberty University is a good option for anybody working while going to school. I'm sure other programs of theirs are fine but I am deeply unsatisfied with the School Counseling program, which is now in the college of behavioral sciences instead of the college of education. You are required to complete 4 intensives (on-campus classes) even if you already took those classes at a different university. Liberty will not honor them, even if they have identical rubrics and course numbers. The intensives... Read More are very expensive, you have to pay for flights, hotels, food, etc. and NONE of the intensive professors let you know when their course will finish. The intensives are supposed to go Monday - Friday from 8am or 8:30am to 5pm or 5:30pm. I've had some professors not even make us go on Friday and I could have returned home a day earlier and not paid for another night in my hotel. I've had other professors who threatened to fail me because I could only get a flight out of Lynchburg or Roanoke that leaves at 3pm on Friday. The whole intensive system is a mess and there is no kindness, compassion, or leniency. I've also had issues with my required practicum (150hrs) and internship (600hrs). The school counseling office was of no help to me in getting my practicum site. The school is not supposed to help you find placement for practicum, but I think they should reevaluate that and help their students get placement. I've spoken to numerous students who've agreed. It's different with internship, the school counseling office is supposed to find you placement for your two semesters of interning. They did no such thing. My degree has to be delayed another year now because of Liberty doing a terrible job in finding me placement. I even took a prerequisite for internship, because Liberty would not grant me special permission to take it after or during my internship, two days after my wedding. I had to rearrange my entire honeymoon in order to take this class so I could intern this fall. Guess what. I'm not interning in the fall! Since March, Liberty has been trying to find me an internship but has been vastly unsuccessful. It is now one day before I need to pay for the class and I have no prospects. I was the one who had to try and find my internship myself after I realized Liberty does absolutely nothing to help. I told Liberty to communicate with a woman from the district, who I found on my own time, and they did not until last minute, so I missed out on that opportunity. Like I said at the beginning of the review, Liberty is probably a great option for students in programs that do not have to complete: Internships, practicums, or intensives; But for me, being a student at Liberty has been a living Hell every step of the way! They pride themselves on being a Christian university but it's funny because nowhere at this school did I experience any compassion, love, or understanding.

Wonderful online education... no true assistance with seeking outside resources for financial aid. I am at my internship and have no funding to pay for this last class. After 16 years of part-time study as a single mother I am out of a degree. In asking for advice for an internship location was told that I should either move or find one far away that I can drive too (remember key words, single mother). I am transferring out of Liberty University Online next month. I started in the summer of 2016 with high hopes of this college being worth the investment. First of all, this is a Christian University, which I understood coming into this program as someone who is not a devout Christian. I was honest with admissions by telling them that I was not very religious, although I have Christian values, and I asked if there was a substantial amount of religion incorporated into the curriculum. I was told that... Read More religion would be incorporated, but not to the extent that it would take away from the education aspect of the M.Ed program. The first two classes I took contained a moderate amount of religion. However, the third class I signed up for and subsequently dropped forced students to incorporate Christianity and the bible into every single assignment. It was taking away from the education and counseling aspect of a school counseling degree. This class required a discussion in which you were to answer "How will you incorporate Christianity into your classroom lessons?". It is both unethical and illegal to express your religious values in public schools. Not to mention, some of the assignments were unethical themselves. A class I withdrew from included an assignment that required students to locate a mentally handicapped individual and interview them. I was uncomfortable will discriminating and profiling mentally disabled individuals in such a way. One professor I had generated robotic feedback to each student's discussion. He would write the same responses and not provide any thoughtful or unique feedback. He would also give 100's on everything. This class was not challenging at all for a Graduate level class. The work was easy and barely required a brain. You're also assigned an "advisor" on your first day. There is a phone number provided with the adviser's information but, of course, the number goes straight to LUO's advising center. It's not a direct, personal number for your advisor...just a very odd system. For the M.Ed. in school counseling you're also required to attend 4 intensives on campus. Which are 5 days each and hotel costs around the area are not cheap. The admissions team told me initially that I could attend the "off-campus" intensives if the designated location was closer to where I lived. This was something that I appreciated and planned on doing. What they didn't tell me was that it costs an extra $1,000.00 to attend off campus intensives and sometimes the classes you need to take are not even offered at some locations. Thanks for being upfront Liberty. This school is not worth anyone's time or money. Find a school that is not going to force you to include religon into each assignment, that has quality professors, and that treats you like an individual. For those of you considering LUO, I am writing this for you. I wish I had known all of these things ahead of time so I wouldn't have wasted my time and money. Unfortunately, I can't get either of those back.

The faculty is wonderful. Every instructor I have communicated with has been very helpful. My classes at the campus were some of the most amazing experiences of my life, and I made friends across the country. However, I think a distance grad program in counseling is lacking simply because it is a distance program. I think we do not see learn the same amount of information, and my classes were not as rigorous as other programs I have heard of. That being said, I'm glad I was able to do it online,... Liberty University has continued to impressed me since I was first accepted in 2013. They were able to give me a chance to continue my education when I thought that I had very limited options. Because I take both online and intensive (on-campus) courses, my lower scores, I feel, are more reflective of my limited experiences and access to "social life", "affordability of living", and the "surrounding area". The on-campus courses are a completely different classroom experience from what I have ever had before. My professors thus far have been amazing instructors and have never shown a lack of compassion. It is truly a very open, supportive, and wonderful community to be a part of!
