Earning my Masters of Elementary Education degree was a turning point in my life. I changed careers. When I completed the degree and student teaching, I immediately became a teacher, and am on my 8th consecutive year teaching. I love teaching and now want to start another Masters program to be dual certified in Special Education. This degree has been a challenge, but a good challenge! You have to be disciplined and work hard. It is fully accredited and they did require previous transcripts in order to go from an undergraduate to a graduate degree! I felt like the work I did was just busywork and didn't help me prepare to be a teacher. The required group work was a joke. My coursework was all online and you were required to do group work and were graded on it. As we all know, when we do group work, there are many who choose to not participate. Then after attending a life-changing retreat, I realized I needed to give more back for all the good that had been given to me. I entered the religious life as a religious missionary sister, giving up all personal possessions. I was able to help youth in different parts of the world, however, my education was put on hold. After a few years, I was able to continue my education with University of Phoenix. My re-entry counselor was amazing. She helped me get back on track right away. I was living in a different state at the time and she was able to connect me with an academic counselor who informed me of the education program changes and requirements. She also assisted me in waiving new classes using many of my old classes that were equivalent. Due to my becoming a missionary, I had to also transfer my program to 100% online. This was a big change for me, but I really loved the convenience of being able to work my education around my busy schedule. The quality was still high and the assignments challenging. I was still able to work with groups and gain valuable information and advice from my professors and peers. Many of my former and current classmates are teachers and department heads from a variety of states. Now, I am about to begin student teaching and will hopefully be graduating soon. But other that that I feel that my program has been such a positive experience and has allowed me to go back to school!
