Most of the core courses for Western Governors are paper writing. You don't learn anything about the subject for which you want to get a degree. You get an assignment that will take 2-3 weeks to complete. The assignments are a few years old. They just get recycled every term. Courses like this are why employers are skeptical about hiring people with online degrees. The information given in this course is something you could do on your own and save money. Basically, it's an assignment you might get from an employer, but with no help from coworkers. Very disappointing and definitely does not provide a learning opportunity.

At work, I am a Senior Security Analyst for the largest global law firm in the world. This position requires I be available 24/7 for emergency purposes. In 2013, I decided it was time to complete my bachelor's degree. I had several reasons as motivation. First, my oldest child was close to graduating high school, and I wanted him to go to earn his bachelor's degree, and I did not want hypocrite. Second, my career had reached a plateau because I had no college degree. Lastly, my employer was willing to assist with the tuition. WGU was affordable and relevant to my line-of-work, by making all of the classes online with plenty of technical resources to augment to courses. I found all of the courses interesting and challenging. What I found the most valuable about the degree plan was as I completed my classes, I was also earning IT certification which made my education even more relevant. After completing my bachelor's recruiters from other companies started calling. I ended up getting multiple offers from well-respected companies, all of the offers were over six figures. Financial Analysis in my opinion was the hardest class in the entire program and it kicked my butt. If you can pass that class you can pass any of the other classes. Would I recommend WGU to folks? No I wouldn't since most people want the full college experience. If you only care about the education and forgo the parties/social life that accompany the true college experience, then you should give WGU a chance. It won't be easy but for sure you'll learn a lot. Also WGU don't have the branding compared to elite schools, so if you care about that then the school isn't for you. Lastly, from my personal experience (which I hope is just me) I didn't really see much of an impact to my salary or career growth after getting my MBA from WGU. I hope I am the exception not the norm.

Western Govenors University is an excellent school. This worked well for me, but if you struggle with organization, there are tools available to help provide structure for those less organized with their time and commitments. Course mentors are available to help you through any difficulties you may experience in the course work. Course mentors are PhDs in the field they are teaching. I found them to be outstanding in every way, very knowledgeable, eager to help and very available. The school is not a paper mill, it does not accept everyone that applies, but if you have experience in your field and appropriate documentation, you should be fine. Someone with good experience in their chosen field may be able to advance rapidly through the degree program. Competence based education through online learning is genius in that it provides a high quality education at a reduced cost. Tuition at WGU is fixed with no hidden costs - including your books (provided online). You get six months to complete as much as possible, so acceleration is up to you. It is possible all student mentors are good at their jobs, but mine was particularly excellent. Always going the extra mile, he made arrangements for me to speak to course mentors, introducing me and providing background before I spoke to them and helped me navigate through the very robust learning platform. He also, gently and effectively, kept me on task. Coursework itself is quite excellent, provided by experienced educators, often from other schools who take time to teach at WGU. My courses included a class taught by a professor at UCLA, one from UNLV, another from UofU and my favorite class was taught by a BYU professor. There are two types of exams, Objective (question and answer exams), and Performance (you write a paper or complete a project). Objective exams are uniquely proctored online so there is no need to go to a testing center. The exam material is challenging and will thoroughly test your competence. My background in IT, finance, and accounting did help and may have provided me an edge in these exams, but my most difficult courses were Statistics, and the IT related courses. WGU provides excellent learning resources for research purposes and other skilled resources such as a writing center that provides great help for grammar and citations. I enjoyed my experience at WGU. I seem to enjoy learning more than I did years ago. The experience gave everything context and I saw the value of what I was learning immediately.
