Student Reviews of Online Journalism Programs
I have really enjoyed my time at Full Sail University, even if it was online. The professors have been kind to me, the students helped me when I struggled with some concepts I did not recognize, and there were plenty of assignments to keep me busy and help me shape my career.

I enjoyed this past year. The work challenged me and helped me reframe my thinking. The information I learned has contributed to how well I write. The teachers were educated and experienced. They were also encouraging when the challenge was on. I was given clarity for improving my work. I appreciate the experience more than you can imagine, especially at my age. This was a major accomplishment for me. The school staff was accommodating when I had questions. There were no dumb questions. Overall,... Read More

The pros of this program are the opportunity to go to New York Fashion Week and going one of very few schools that offer Fashion Journalism. The cons are the costs and very little financial support.

I began the online Master's in Journalism at Regent in 2014. I found only about 2/3 of the classes have been beneficial, which for as inflexible and tight a degree it is, was incredibly discouraging. The Journalism Technology Tools class was at a first-year undergraduate level. The Internet Marketing and Story, Pop Culture, & Worldview courses were taught in an approach irrelevant to the degree. What perhaps was most discouraging was the amount of required time towards peer responses. The bar for... Read More

No cons. The pros: 5 week long semesters per course in each degree program. Teachers are informative, helpful, and excellent to work with.

The problem with the University of Arizona is the sudden and disastrous increase in tuition over the last decade. College was once affordable at the University of Arizona, but it's become increasingly expensive and yet, the actual value of the education has remained steady.

Admin have ridiculously high salaries but don't care about the students. The professors are really good but are treated poorly by the admin. The ones who teach the most are paid the least. And the school no longer has tenure. All the best profs are leaving.

I am currently enrolled as a graduate student at UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism, and I am a first-year. Given that it is a two-year program, I am only able to speak on the experiences of first semester. I would like to begin with a note on faculty and staff. The school is relatively small, but it is staffed with a sufficient amount of employees who dedicate their time (and careers) to making the lives of their students easier. We have unobstructed access to financial advisers, career... Read More

The University of Arizona Journalism School is exceptional. Our professors have journalistic such a wide range of journalistic experience ranging from positions at National Geographic, The New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal. They do a fantastic job at passing down their wisdom to students. The program is relatively small so there are a lot of opportunities for support from professors and fellow peers as well. The school itself is open to students 24/7 with the use of our student ID cards,... Read More

I am currently in the Global Journalism program at NYU. I love the program. So far it has given me on the ground experience with reporting, which I have never had before. I have been exposed to various kinds of journalism and encouraged to explore them. I have been able to pursue stories that interest me, while being pushed outside of my comfort zone. I've been inspired by my peers. We often are able to take classes with other journalism students who may specialize in another sector (say business... Read More

Columbia's J-School often gets slack from practitioners in the field and students alike. A number of active journalists and editors believe in an empirical approach to journalism and deride the formal, theoretical or skills-based training offered at the school. The reasoning goes that journalism is a trade and therefore must be learned with a hands-on approach, the shoe-leather route. That isn't untrue. Certainly, hands-on training is necessary (going out and reporting, interviewing people, digging... Read More

Being the daughter of two immigrant parents, education has always been my number one priority. Attending CUNY was the best decisions I made. CUNY has not only allowed me to grow as a person but as a journalist, a Mexican-American journalist ready to go to work! CUNY and the Journalism Department has such a diversity, it's my home away from home. I'm so thankful for my professors, my classmates, and the university that wants to see their students succeed.

Currently enrolled as a student as part of Columbia University's School of Journalism graduate program. With a diverse student body, diverse professors, and a long history of excellence, the program is both shaping and affirming. I am still attending the university. It is helping to prepare me for the field of journalism. Classes are taught by university professors as well as outside people that work in the field of journalism that bring a current perspective. I have earned a lot.

In my specific program, the Magazine Writing program, I couldn't imagine a better opportunity than to be studying at New York University surrounded by some of the best and most forward-thinking writers in the country. The cumulative experience and expertise of the faculty is invaluable, and the location and proximity to professional opportunities after graduation is unmatched. The education received at NYU's grad schools is worth every dollar, and I eagerly look forward to the opportunities with... Read More

Can't really speak to affordability or campus safety as a commuter student but I have really appreciated my experience so far. Impressed by the investment the professors and administrators have made in getting us through the program successfully and in helping us pursue our academic interests. There's a tremendous sense of kindness and genuine support but very rigorous expectations as well.

Things will always fall through the cracks anytime you try to do something on a mass scale. The same is true for USC Annenberg's Graduate Journalism programs. Basically, this program is just the BA Journalism curriculum but for students who didn't major in the subject in college. If you're a slab of clay who doesn't know what a newspaper is, USC will mold you. But the more experience you have in journalism entering this program, the more frustrated you will be. The tricky thing about a Journalism... Read More

While I have yet to attend Columbia University in the City of New York, I am already impressed with the administration's attention towards prospective and incoming students. As I went to a large public undergrad school, I’ve experienced an educational institution with a lot of bureaucracy and a lack of communication amongst student service departments. From the day I attended an Open House session for the school to now, a mere month away from my first day at Columbia, I’ve received nothing but detailed... Read More
