I am a current student and my tuition has not "magically increased". My mentor has been helpful and practical in thinking. I have not had any difficulty in getting in contact with my mentor. Financial aid has been extremely transparent and I feel like I am able to make informed decisions. The curriculum is difficult and has forced me to learn. I've read a lot of negative reviews about Walden, but I have to say that wasn't my experience at all. I'd also like to start by saying my B.S. degree is in Physics, so clearly I'm no stranger to rigorous, difficult, and challenging school experiences. This is a career switch for me, and I expected it to be easy, especially compared to my physics degree. Imagine my surprise to find out it was quite challenging! My classes required a lot of work- typically, for my two classes per quarter (this is how... Read More much work I had for both classes combined): I'd have two discussion posts (like a 1-2 page paper, with references), responses to 4 classmates (also with references), two application papers (3-5 pages, with references), 17 articles and 5 chapters to read. It was a lot of work. And my research and methodology class (the format changed after I took it, so this would be the older format) was easily as hard as my Optics class had been in physics, lol. My professors provided good and helpful feedback, and truly cared about whether we were able to apply the material. I finished the degree in 29 months; I did an extra class for two quarters to put me a quarter ahead. I did not take any breaks. I did have a challenge finding a site to do my internship, because most places didn't have the volume of couples/ families I needed to see. It took awhile but I found one about 40 minutes from my house- it was a sacrifice, but sometimes that's what's required. A lot of colleagues complained that the school wasn't doing enough to help them find placements; I see both sides of that argument. On the one hand, they could develop relationships with agencies in all 50 states so that there are places students can go, but that's highly subjective, because it depends on each student's concentration. On the other hand, it's a bit like "how bad do you want it?"... because it's my responsibility to put forth the effort to find the placement that fits best for me. I considered it the equivalent of me searching for a job. Overall, I am very pleased with the education I received at Walden, and this has been reflected by my site supervisors as well, who found me to be well-educated and prepared to see clients and run groups. Because the faculty are practicing counselors, their expertise and experience were invaluable, and helped make for a richer experience. I took the NCE before I graduated because my program is CACREP accredited; I passed on the first try- and I owe a lot to the rigor with which I was trained through my classes to this success. I was offered a job before I even graduated! I had no problem with financial aid, registration, residency (now called ore-practicum), or any of the nuts and bolts of the school. I'd highly recommend Walden to anyone looking for an online experience who is willing to work hard (hard!), be accountable, and remain diligent.

I started when the tuition was lower than it is now. Touro University Worldwide was the only other inexpensive online program at the time and so the choice was a toss up. WASC accreditation and affordability were the main reasons I chose this program. Like any school, some teachers were good, some were fair and some were pretty bad; overall most were good. You are really on your own in the classes and for finding a suitable practicum site. I would recommend to any student who just finished a bachelor's degree that they attend a brick and mortar school with a cohort group and the chance to practice in a classroom setting. That was not me and this program for the price I paid was ideal. I also recommend a COAMFTE Accredited Program for most, but since I am planning on staying in California for the foreseeable future, that was not necessary for me. It seems that a COAMFTE accredited degree is more portable and accepted by more states without the hassle of jumping through a bunch of hoops. It is also much more expensive! In the end, for about $25,000 total (books, tuition & fees), I have an accredited degree, am now registered in CA as a counselor and am well on my way to licensing. I also already have a job and an offer for another job (both from sites where I did practicums). Overall, my experience was very good and I am 100% satisfied.

I should of already graduated. The internship program NCU supplied me has been very slow. I do not get enough hours to finish the 500 hours. It is very frustrating that the internship is taking so long. As we only get credited for the hours of council, not the hours of writing up. To me, I feel like the company that I am doing the internship with is abusing the system as they have me for 'free' hours. I have over 300 hours in for over a year. I go three times a week for 8 hours each day, but out... Read More of the 15 appointments, there are more than half no shows and that equals to no credit. I have asked for more companies that I can finish but have received no response from any counselor or staff at NCU.

Northcentral University is a wonderful school for someone that works fulltime. The professors help with any needs that you may have had great experiences with each professor. Each faculty member has assisted me when I had various needs to make sure that I accomplished my goals. I am enjoying attending the university. True, the classes are online, making student and teacher communication more difficult. True, it is not difficult to upkeep a good grade, thus giving you the feeling that the education is not good. Touro University Worldwide, or TUW, focuses solely on people and the dynamic within themselves, their family and their therapist, so you come into session with real skills for your career. I know this because I am interning and I already see how much my skills has helped me excel. Not only with clients, but with other therapists: group meeting with fellow therapists are a strong area where I can even help experienced therapists out with their cases. At the same time, if you do not have a knack for people, knowledge alone will not take you far enough. Within the schools that offer a Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy, very few are online. Being online gives you the capability to do your school work wherever you are and enables you to have a flexible schedule. The price, which is about 30,000 is well below many other schools. TUW is currently giving out discounts to new students (so it doesn't apply to me) offering up to 13,800 if you take 2 classes per a semester. Good luck!

Going to a college online is a real challenge. It requires so much more of the student than the traditional college or university. The programs are pretty awesome and make sure that you know what you are talking about when you get that degree. The professors in the Masters program are experts or veterans in the field. Find a group on Facebook for Capella students and start asking questions. If you are working, create a self care plan and get your family on a schedule so you can take the time to study, you will be expected to write a lot of essays at the Masters level.

Capella University's MFT/C program emphasizes on the systemic theories within the field of marriage and family therapy.
