NU is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (). NECHE is recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) as a reliable accreditation agency. NECHE is a voluntary, non-governmental membership organization with accredited members in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

NU is one of the first — and oldest —  in the United States. In addition, NU is the birthplace of the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC), a college preparatory program that helps college students become U.S. military officers. For any prospective applicant, weighing the pros and cons of attending NU is essential. For students interested in joining the military after college, NU can be a great starting point, as they offer the .
