I am a 45 year old who has recently made a big decision to go to school. I think that if someone wants to take the time to do this then DeVry is the school for you. They have made it very easy to know what you need to do, how you are going to pay for it, what your bills will be at the end of the journey, and they are here to help you suceed to do what you are capabile of doing. Read More class. this class helped me to see what my full potential is and it helped me to discover that I am capabile of going back after so many years of being out of school. I look forward to the rest of my journey and am inspired by the staff and students that currently I have interaction with. This was my review after taking just two courses. Since then I have taken many and still feel the same. DeVry is well worth the effort and money. They have wonderful professors, administration, fellow students, and a staff of individuals that are very knowledgable in their areas of work. DeVry staff help you see what you are capable of doing and are there when you need them to answer a question or solve a problem. They are all well worth every penny that I am spending on my adventure to get a degree that I want.

The school and curricula are excellent. I have had no issues with the actual courses and once I began actually completing course work all the administration of my enrollment went well. I would warn before and during enrollment individuals have no access to the majority of the available courses and no access to audit degree plans except through an advisor. This makes selecting a degree plan an act of faith. It takes some digging, but audits are provided if the right person is asked the right question.... Read More Financial aid is not easily deciphered either. Enrollment councilors or advisors are not inclined to provide any objective or knowledgeable information pertaining to even the most basic financial aid inquires. Direct all questions or concerns over funding directly to the financial aid. Press for additional information and expect only the exact information requested. It took over fifteen individual conversations for me obtain a full description of the tuition disbursement schedule and refund process. Due to misinformation and omissions concerning financial aid my refund was delayed almost two weeks. As a first semester student with WGU all disbursements are delayed until the 30th day of your first course after enrollment. Funds are further restricted to a two stage disbursement during each semester. Pell grant is released the first day of your enrolled course (after the first semester at WGU). Loans subsidized or unsubsidized are released fifteen days later. This does not take into account holidays or any other unforeseen delays. Being enrolled in courses is not the final trigger for disbursements. A minimum of 12 cu (credit hours or credit units) must accepted within the enrolled degree plan. A student mentor helps chose courses to be taken during the current semester. As a student it is your responsibility accept these 12 cu to complete enrollment in the given courses. Failing to complete this process will delay disbursement as I found out the hard way. Overall the school is excellent. However, believe there is room for more transparency both before and after initial enrollment. The ability to complete courses through competency exams is an excellent opportunity to accelerate a degree program. The tuition is very competitive. The convenience of online courses is very liberating after being confined to a campus for 18 months. I would recommend WGU to anyone with the discipline to work independently and keep motivated to complete any degree plan. For my money it has been the best educational investment have ever made.

I'm surprised to see some of the negative comments. I am halfway through my program, and am impressed with the courses taken so far. There are always some instructors that are not as good as others, but overall, my experience has been a good one. You get out of it what you put into it. I began DeVry University Winter of 2011. It was supposed to be a 3 year program but it ended up being 4 years. There are positives and negatives to DeVry. They do have academic advisors that check with you every so often and help you schedule your classes. Their financial advisors also help you understand you costs and awards. Being able to be flexible in your schedule is awesome since I'm a single mom of two little ones. Though this was a great decision for me, it also proves difficult at times.... Other than finances, DeVry offers loads of help and a flexible schedule.

I had many issues with the financial aid department. First, they did not use my loans to pay for an entire semester. I was told that I had to make arrangements to pay $1,700.00 back or I could not continue to go to their school until payment arrangements where setup. Second, they discovered that they made another mistake by giving me $900.00 to,much and had to pay it back. Again, all of my college education is suppose to be paid for with student loans. I paid all my debts back to them and was treated as though these mistakes were somehow my fault.

I am active duty Army and had about 60 credits from other schools when I started with UMUC. I was deployed to Iraq when I took my first class and had no issues with access to the course, instructors, or help desk. Some classes were more challenging than others, but overall I liked the school. I had no issues with financial aid or with any portion of the school for that matter. I transferred into UOP Online with over 100 credits (not all transferred to my new program) and a 4.0 and ended up completing a business degree there. Although skeptical at first, I found that the online platform was a very good fit for my learning style. The UOP style is different from the traditional academic approach in that it focuses less on academic theory and more on application in the work environment. Read More previous job, and participation requirements in the 300+-level courses often turn into discussions of what students are experiencing at work and how it compares to the theories they are encountering in class. The facilitator (UOP instructors are not called teachers) does not choose sides, so everyone can argue their case, but the good ones throw in their own professional experience, which is often substantial. I enjoyed having a facilitator with years of work experience to relate to the topics. It is also a self-taught model rather than the old-school approach of sitting in the audience listening to a professor. I enjoy reading and writing, so I was very happy with the experience, that is, after I got over the frustrations with the learning team requirements. However, even though it is a challenge to work with others who procrastinate and turn in sub-par work, I found it to be a perfect example of how it works in the real world. I told myself, "Thou shalt suck it up and move forward." As far as the campus staff, there are the very dedicated and the very unconcerned finance and academic advisors, and not much in between. The University has a number of scholarships, grants, credits, discounts, and other options to offer financial assistance and mitigate the impact of needing to drop a class for personal reasons. However, not all advisors pass this information along to students, so it is one area that needs improvement. The business programs are challenging if you put in the effort. You will find a lot of low-quality students in the 100 and 200-level courses because these are the easy ones, no matter where you go to school. By the time you reach your core classes, the flock of uncommitted students will have dropped out. Most students can trot right along through a management, business systems, or ethics course, but struggle with math, statistics, finance, and accounting. It may be because these particular subjects generally have right and wrong answers where most other subjects are a matter of finding a reputable source to support an opinion. What to expect: I can only vouch for the school of business. I found the course material sufficient, the library excellent, and the assignments relevant to the real world. That is more than I can say for the traditional formula used by most other schools. If you are diligent and make learning your priority, you can thrive in this environment. They will not teach you at this school. The UOP provides a structured environment, framework for your chosen program area, and materials, but the bulk of the learning is on the learner. This is not a negative; it is just college. In my opinion, it's a very modern approach and the one that most closely matches the business environment. The workload: First, there is a traditional syllabus and the requirement to use APA formatting on all papers and include proper citations. Plagiarism violations are strictly monitored and punished by academic withdrawn from the class and an F grade. Most standard 5-week courses in the bachelor's program have 3-4 individual papers, 3-4 team assignments, and 1 cumulative test. Some have quizzes or other small assignments as well. The participation requirements vary, but 6-8 posts around 200 words each per week is normal, and the length and level of difficulty varies with each course and by facilitator. The workload is sufficient to gain exposure to the most critical topics, but, as with any other school, the learner can choose to do bare minimum reading and research, or put in maximum effort. For the record, "trying it" must include more than the first 2 classes. The first course is almost worthless, so be prepared for that. It's there because a lot of people realize in that class that online learning just isn't for them, or they're not really committed to college, and they shouldn't waste their money. A word of caution before you choose to go to any school online: If you do not like to write, you will have trouble. If you cannot spell or use correct grammar and punctuation, the whole class will see it. Additionally, reading an electronic textbook may be more trying on your eyes and mind than reading paper text. Lastly, based on my experience and that of others I know, it is more difficult to go to school online than it is to complete the same course in a traditional classroom. Online is simply a convenient location. Overall Opinion: The UOP produces the same average quality of graduates as other schools. Some are superstars, some mediocre, and others just barely made it through. Some employers do care about the brand of a school, but I personally did not have trouble finding a job in the area I wanted. I received more interviews after getting my degree than prior to receiving it, and from better companies. My current and former employer were both happy with my education (my last boss was also a UOP grad). I also noticed that hundreds of employers, the military, and the VA are perfectly willing to pay for their employees to attend the UOP, so I cannot believe that "everyone knows the degree is worthless." I believe that attitude is tradition butting heads with something new that threatens the status quo. On another note, the UOP has brought in new deans to help strengthen the curriculum in each school, so I believe the experience will keep getting better and better. If anything will sink the boat it will be a failure to address the concerns so many have had with their advisors, and where I am seeing most of the negative reviews. This has to do with the administration rather than the quality of the education.

I started UoP in 2007 and have obtained my AA in Business (2009) and my BS (with concentration in Project Management in 2012). My financial and academic advisors were great. The helped me plan my classes, obtain the grants that I was eligible for, and encouraged me when I felt I was about to throw in the towel.
