Becoming a Nurse in South Dakota

Becoming a nurse in South Dakota takes dedication to pursue the necessary education and testing. You generally need to earn an approved or accredited nursing certificate or degree. You might also need to pass the appropriate version of the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX), depending on what type of nurse you're trying to become.

The South Dakota Board of Nursing regulates licenses for licensed practical nurses (LPNs), registered nurses (RNs), and advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs). The nursing board and the Department of Health take joint responsibility for the state's certified nurse aide (CNA) registry.

South Dakota is grappling with a that affects rural areas the most. As in many states, South Dakota's nursing workforce was declining even before COVID-19 due to a lack of nurse educators qualified to teach the next generation. The state will have plenty of open positions in coming years, but working conditions are likely to be less than ideal as administrators try to do more with less.

Read on to discover the requirements for each level of nursing in the Mount Rushmore State.

How To Get Certified Nurse Aide Certification in South Dakota

Aspiring CNAs must complete a board-approved teaching the proper knowledge and skills for the job. Graduates then need to pass a test with written and skill-based, hands-on sections. Alternatively, CNAs can receive certification by endorsement if they verify that they're certified in good standing in another state.

CNAs must renew their registration every two years. They need to demonstrate that they've completed at least 12 hours of approved continuing education each year and that they worked for pay as a CNA for at least 12 hours in the previous two years.

How To Get a Licensed Practical Nurse License in South Dakota

As with all its nursing licenses, South Dakota can grant LPN licenses or . New LPNs must take a board-approved practical nursing program before taking the NCLEX-PN. Endorsement candidates must submit proof of licensure in their original state, along with proof of employment to demonstrate that they've worked as an LPN. Both sets of applicants must undergo a background check.

LPN licenses renew every two years. Renewal requires LPNs to show that they worked at least 140 hours during any 12-month stretch of the last six years.

How To Get a Registered Nursing License in South Dakota

South Dakota RN applicants must earn an accredited Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. Licensure-by-examination applicants then need to pass the NCLEX-RN, while licensure-by-endorsement hopefuls submit proof of licensure elsewhere. Each candidate must submit to a criminal background check.

RN licenses must be renewed every two years. South Dakota doesn't make licensees complete continuing education, but they do need to verify that they worked at least 140 hours during any 12-month period from the last six years.

I completed the RN to BSN degree. PROS: The classes were self-paced, so I was able to take as few as 10 credits and as many as 22 credits in the 10-week Excel Track terms. I liked that I could be working on several classes at the same time. The classes were not difficult, just time-consuming. I would say that 90% of the BSN assignments were papers and PowerPoints, mostly covering nursing theory. It became quite redundant by the final term, but wasn't difficult. Everything is self-taught. I didn't... Read More

I want to start by saying I am very thankful for chamberlain. I started here with a ADN and now I’m in my last semester of my BSN program. I have to say chamberlain is very fair. As we are experiencing crisis they work with you and try to accommodate you. My financial aide didn’t cover my education however I was able to get a payment plan and thankful it was reasonable. It is because of this university I will be a family nurse practitioner. Chamberlain also gives you several chances. It’s a win-win.... Read More

I am a California RN who began my AOBSN program through UTA 08/2019, immediately following becoming licensed. The admissions process is very easy, the classes themselves for the most part aren't bad. The student support is subpar at best, though (which isn't an issue if you can self teach and navigate the courses on your own), often academic coaches in classes don't answer questions in a timely fashion (if you're in an accelerated class that's only 5wks long, you better ask all of your questions... Online RN-BSN Program is awesome! It was very flexible and really affordable compared to other schools I looked into. I shopped around before making my decision. The application was free and I was immediately connected to someone that helps you. This program is challenging and I felt very rewarded once I completed. I had a lot of support from my advisor and professors the entire time.

I think South is a great school. I completed my BSN with them, each instructor was very professional. I can agree, its overwhelming, classes arent designed for the working family. HOWEVER, they were very understanding and sensitive to my daughters illness. They worked with me during her hospitalization , chemotherapy and bone marrow transplant.

Mentor was great she called me every week for almost 2 years. I had some health issues and worked part time. If I was not sick I could have finished earlier. One word I would use to describe the person that does WGU is DISCIPLINED. Like I already saw from one reviewer, no one is holding your hand , but always help when needed. It is affordable, accredited and accelerated if you do it. I am very PLEASED with my RN to BSN education at WGU.

I was a ER Nurse with a full-time civilian job and full-time military job. Walden University came to my attention word of mouth from fellow nurses. The application process was simple. I appreciated they gave me class credit for years of working as a nurse! The online resources, such as library and writing center, are so helpful I came back to gain my Masters.

When I first started searching for ABSN programs, I read a lot of terrible reviews about Olivet. I won't lie. However, most of the reviews you see online are from people who have failed out and/or are ticked off, right? I thought maybe that was the case. So, I decided to get on LinkedIn and reach out to some people who had actually graduated from the program. After 2 phone calls, I was hearing many of the same things. Yes, it's SOOOOOOOO hard. Yes, it sometimes sucks. Yes, it can be annoying. No,... Read More

This program is hard. Very hard. I have a bachelor's degree in biology but this program teaches you how to think VERY differently! You cannot just do what you always have done in other programs. Nursing is different. Think about how you will need to act in the ER. You'll need to know how to think critically and act fast. It's not about memorization - there are several right answers - but you need to figure out what's the right answer for the patient in front of you. Don't try and work, have a life... Read More

Herzing is very hands on with a small classroom setting which makes it easy for students to get in touch with teachers and receive one on one help if needed. I would definitely recommend Herzing to any college student out there. The teachers and faculty show a great interest in you and take the time to make sure you... Read More

I currently take classes at the Indianapolis campus and I love it here! I was told up front what classes transferred, which classes I needed and what the total cost would be. Teachers here really care about you; they don't want us to fail. Some classes are very hard some very easy! It all depends on how much work and time you are willing to put towards each class. As a student at Anderson University, I can say that this school will prepare you for your future. I am only a freshman, and have fallen in love with the rigor of the courses. Some freshman have fallen behind because they were not ready for the transition, while some students are succeeding and taking their courses on full speed. This university cares for its students, without holding their hand. I have not been accepted into the nursing program, due to the fact I am not a sophomore and have not taken... Read More

I recently finished the BSN program at the Orlando campus. First and foremost, it was challenging and I am proud to say that I have finished. Thankfully, securing a job at a local hospital with a degree from this school is easy. Does the school prepare you for the NCLEX and give you the tools you need to be successful? Yes, it does. On the other hand, you have to have thick skin to attend this program. You need thick skin in general to work in the field of nursing so if you are up for a frustrating... Read More

Disappointed, Graduated 2017

Attended: Nevada State College

Nevada State College quickly became a strong name in Southern Nevada for nursing. Years back I decided to return to school after my first bachelors from UNLV turned out to not provide many opportunities. I completed pre-read at Nevada State and was accepted into their (now non-existent) accelerated program. Quite an accomplishment considering the number of applicants. Life happened and I had to turn down my spot. It's a shame, because the education of my classmates that completed it was wonderful.... Read More

This was a hard program to get through. I definitely think the teachers care that you become a great nurse. The clinical instructors however all need to be replaced. A clinical instructor who falls asleep at clinicals should be fired, not given another chance. Teachers should not be hired just because they are friends with management. Financial aid will continuously mess things up over and over. They can't get anything right. If it wasn't for those few teachers that really cared about their students... Read More

Lamar university is a wonderful university for any student to attend. I attended Lamar University from 2007-2011 where I pursued and obtained my bachelor's of science in nursing (BSN).
