Becoming a Nurse in California

There are many types of nurse programs offered online, but how certifications and degrees are recognized can vary by state. In California, you can pursue a career as a certified nursing assistant (CNA), licensed vocational nurse (LVN), registered nurse (RN), or advanced practice nurse (APN).

The California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) approves all pre-licensure RN programs. They may also approve RN and APN programs, verifying that such programs conform to the board's standard. APN program specializations recognized by the BRN include nurse-midwifery and nurse anesthesia.

Nursing is a popular career choice in California. There are more than registered nurses currently licensed by the California Board of Registered Nursing, more than any other state in the country. California also leads the way in nursing wages, with RNs earning an average mean salary of and LVNs earning an average of .

How To Get CNA Certification in California

The (CDPH) oversees CNA certifications in California. To obtain a certificate, applicants must submit an application for enrollment in an approved CDPH training program, along with a copy of the Request for Live Scan Service form (for fingerprinting and background checking), to the CDPH.

Approved training programs consist of 60 or more hours of classroom instruction and 100 hours of supervised training. Training can be completed at an approved school or local Red Cross. Students must be 16 or older.

After completing their program, applicants must demonstrate their skills and knowledge of basic patient care services by passing a Competency Evaluation Examination. Candidates are expected to pass the examination within two years of completing the training program.

CNA Certification Renewal

CNA certification in California is valid for two years. Renewal requires 48 hours of In-Service Training/Continuing Education Units (CEUs) each two-year certification period. CNAs must complete at least 12 hours each year, and up to 24 hours for each renewal period can be completed through a CDPH-approved online computer training program.

How To Get an LPN/LVN License in California

In California, licensed practical nurses (LPNs) are called licensed vocational nurses (LVNs).

The (BVNPT) oversees LVNs. Applicants for a California LVN license must first complete an accredited vocational nursing certificate program. These programs can be found at many community colleges and usually take 12-14 months to complete with a full-time schedule. Students take courses in biology, pharmacology, and nursing, and also receive hands-on experience in a clinical setting.

According to , students must complete an approved program, fill out an application, provide background check information, and pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) or National League for Nursing Test Pool Practical Nursing Examination (NLN) to be eligible for licensure.

LPN License Renewal

LPNs are required to renew their license every two years. They must complete 30 hours of continuing education within the two years prior to their renewal date.

How To Get an RN License in California

California RN licenses are issued by the (BRN). To qualify, applicants must first earn an associate degree in nursing (ADN), a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), or an Entry-Level Master's in Nursing (ELM).

To apply, license applicants must forward their school transcripts to the BRN, submit an application and fingerprint background check, and pass the NCLEX-RN. California-based nursing programs approved by the BRN will automatically submit transcripts to the board when a program is completed.

RN License Renewal

RN licenses are valid for two years. To qualify for license renewal, RNs must complete 30 hours of continuing education through a provider recognized by the BRN.

How To Get an APN License in California

In California, APNs are certified by the BRN. Individuals seeking certification must first be licensed as an RN. The next step is to earn a masters degree (at minimum) in an APN specialty from an accredited, BRN-approved school. Recognized specialties include:

  1. nurse practitioner
  2. certified nurse-midwife
  3. clinical nurse specialist
  4. nurse anesthetist

Individuals should also earn national certification for their chosen specialty. These independent national certification agencies set their own education, experience, and examination requirements for certification.

To receive an APN certificate from the state of California, individuals must submit an for their specialty. All applicants for APN certification must also submit fingerprints (done through LiveScan) for a background check.

APN License Renewal

APNs are not required to do additional continuing education hours beyond the 30 hours required for renewal of their RN license.

Student Reviews of Online Nursing Programs

Tammy, Graduated 2018

I am disappointed in the negative reviews I see on here. Obviously everyones case and experience is different. I earned my ADN about 15 years ago. I hate school was never good at it. So I just said I would never go back. Well here I am I finished the courses in 5 months. There is a lot of support wether course mentors, student center, or program mentors. If you are not a self motivating person then maybe online is not for you. I never thought it would be for me. It did not exist when I went to school.... Read More

I can testify to the fact that all the comments below are true about the ABSN nursing program in Oakbrook. Please read them thoroughly before taking the risk to enroll in this program. I graduated in Summer 2017 after bouncing through many hoops the school throws at students here. Someone below posted about a student in my cohort, Joee, getting arrested after a court order was filed against him by a Professor who went after him by making up an academic integrity claim. I know him personally and heard... Read More

Teachers are not held accountable for the quality of their lesson plans or for grading assignments in a timely manner. It's been almost a month since the end of the semester and while I have received my grade for the class there is still not a grade posted for the last two weeks worth of work in the class, including the class final! Very unprofessional and disappointing instructors.

I attended the online Bachelor's program at Jacksonville University. When I inquired about the program I was assigned an advisor who walked me step by step though the admission and financial aid processes. He was fabulous. He had an in-depth understanding of these processes, having that information made it easy for me to make decisions about enrollment. Taking classes through the school of nursing was super easy. The distance learning version of the BSN program was well organized with a wealth of knowledge as part of the curriculum. I found that I learned a great deal of knowledge that helped contribute to better clinical skills. The professors/staff were helpful and most often, prompt in their communication when addressing concerns. I really appreciated the online format as it catered to my scheduling needs. I usually don't leave reviews unless it is really bad. This school is bad. Honestly, I feel my money down the drain. School offer almost no scholarships (Don't believe what they say in admissions. They might say they do, but when it comes to cashing their claim, they such. Yes, there is 1 or 2 scholarships for a class of 100 students. What make me so special that I can get it?) Worse of all, I am paid expensive tuition to be guinea pigs for them to improve their online learning program, so they can... Read More

It’s been nothing but a headache since I started. It’s impossible to get ahold of anyone unless your already on campus. Now they pre made everyone’s schedule so I have to be at the school 4 times a week while I work 2 days a week and have 4 kids. They absolutely do NOT work with you to better accommodate your life outside of school. It’s way to expensive and I still have 2 years here. Can’t wait till this nightmare of a school is in my past.

I have loved most of the teachers I have had so far, they have all been more than willing to go the distance to further my education. They take extra time out of their week to make sure students understand the material they teach and I feel as if they honestly care about the people they teach. I enjoy going to class but I'm hardly challenged. I find the work easy but also needed.

Students are getting accepted to this school by cheating on the admissions test. Yes, they get all the test answers and unfortunately take someone’s else’s spot that didn’t have the test answers. Just like the celebrities buying their kids into college, but without the big money, just the test answers. Pretty sad and disgusting if you are trying to get in but you didn’t get a spot because a cheater got the spot.
